जय गणपति सदगुण सदन करिवर वदन कृपाल।
विघ्न हरण मंगल करण जय जय गिरिजालाल।
Meaning: Glory to Lord Ganapati, the merciful one with an excellent elephant face, who is the abode of all virtues. Glory, glory to the beloved son of Mother Parvati (Girija), who removes all obstacles and brings auspiciousness and joy!
॥ चौपाई (Chaupai) ॥
जय जय जय गणपति गणराजू। मंगल भरण करण शुभ काजू।
Meaning: Glory, glory, glory to Lord Ganapati, the king of Shiva's attendants (Ganas). You fill our lives with happiness and ensure the success of all auspicious endeavors.
जय गजबदन सदन सुखदाता। विश्वविनायक बुद्धि विधाता।
Meaning: Glory to the elephant-faced Lord, the bestower of happiness and the abode of bliss. You are the protector/leader of the entire universe and the provider of wisdom.
वक्रतुंड शुचि शुंड सुहावन। तिलक त्रिपुंड्र भाल मन भावन।
Meaning: Your curved trunk is exceptionally pure and beautiful. The Tripundra (three-lined mark of ash/sandalwood) on your forehead is deeply captivating to the mind.
राजत मणि मुक्तन उर माला। स्वर्ण मुकुट शिर नयन विशाला।
Meaning: A garland of gems and pearls beautifully adorns your chest. A golden crown sits perfectly upon your head, and you have large, beautiful eyes.
पुस्तक पाणि कुठार त्रिशूलम्। मोदक भोग सुगंधित फूलम्।
Meaning: Your hands hold a book, an axe, and a trident. You dearly love the offering of Modak (sweet dumplings) and fragrant flowers.
सुंदर पीतांबर तन साजित। चरण पादुका मुनि मन राजित।
Meaning: Beautiful yellow garments (Pitambar) adorn your body. The wooden sandals on your feet are always enshrined in the hearts of the sages (sages constantly meditate upon your feet).
धनि शिव सुवन षडानन भ्राता। गौरी ललन विश्व विख्याता।
Meaning: Blessed are you, O son of Lord Shiva and brother of Shadanana (Lord Kartikeya). You are the beloved son of Mother Gauri and are renowned throughout the world.
ऋद्धि सिद्धि तव चंवर सुधारे। मूषक वाहन सोहत द्वारे।
Meaning: Riddhi and Siddhi (your consorts representing wealth and spiritual powers) stand by you and wave the fly-whisk to serve you. Your vehicle, the mouse, beautifully guards your door.
कहौं जनम शुभ कथा तुम्हारी। अति शुचि पावन मंगलकारी।
Meaning: O Lord! I now narrate the auspicious story of your birth, which is highly pure, holy, and brings great fortune.
एक समय गिरिराज कुमारी। पुत्र हेतु तप कीन्हों भारी।
Meaning: Once, Mother Parvati, the daughter of the mountain king Himalayas, performed severe penance with the deep desire to have a son.
भयो यज्ञ जब पूर्ण अनूपा। तब पहुँच्यो तुम धरि द्विज रूपा।
Meaning: When her grand and unparalleled sacrifice (Yagna) was completed, you yourself arrived there taking the form of a Brahmin.
अतिथि जानि के गौरी सुखारी। बहु विधि सेवा करी तुम्हारी।
Meaning: Welcoming you as a guest, Mother Parvati was highly pleased and served you (in your Brahmin form) in many respectful ways.
अति प्रसन्न ह्वै तुम वर दीन्हा। मातु पुत्र हित जो तप कीन्हा।
Meaning: Highly pleased by her devotion and service, you granted her a boon saying, "O Mother! The penance you have performed to obtain a son will be fruitful."
मिलहिं पुत्र तुंहि बुद्धि विशाला। बिना गर्भ धारण यहि काला।
Meaning: "You will receive a son of immense intellect, right at this very moment, without even having to conceive him in a womb."
गणनायक गुण ज्ञान निधाना। पूजित प्रथम रूप भगवाना।
Meaning: "That son will be the leader of the Ganas and an ocean of virtues and knowledge. That form of God will be worshipped first before anyone else in the world."
अस केहि अन्तर्धान रूप ह्वै। पलना पर बालक स्वरूप ह्वै।
Meaning: Saying this, the Brahmin form vanished, and you immediately manifested as a beautiful infant in a cradle.
बनि शिशु रुदन जबहिं तुम ठाना। लखि मुख सुख नहिं गौरी समाना।
Meaning: When you started crying like a little baby, Mother Parvati's joy knew no bounds upon seeing your beautiful face.
सकल मगन सुख मंगल गावहिं। नभ ते सुरन सुमन वर्षावहिं।
Meaning: Everyone rejoiced and began singing auspicious songs. The deities showered beautiful flowers from the sky.
शम्भु उमा बहु दान लुटावहिं। सुर मुनिजन सुत देखन आवहिं।
Meaning: Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati distributed much charity and wealth. Gods and sages started arriving to catch a glimpse of the beautiful child.
लखि अति आनंद मंगल साजा। देखन भी आए शनि राजा।
Meaning: Seeing this extremely joyous and auspicious celebration, Lord Shani (Saturn) also arrived to see the child.
निज अवगुण गनि शनि मन माहीं। बालक देखन चाहत नाहीं।
Meaning: Remembering his own curse (that his direct gaze brings destruction), Shani Dev hesitated in his mind and avoided looking directly at the child.
गिरिजा कछु मन भेद बढ़ायो। उत्सव मोर न शनि तुहि भायो।
Meaning: Seeing Shani looking away, Mother Parvati grew suspicious and asked, "O Shani! Are you not happy with this celebration happening at my home?"
कहन लगे शनि मन सकुचाई। का करिहों शिशु मोहि दिखाई।
Meaning: Feeling hesitant, Shani Dev replied, "Mother! What good will come from making me look at the child? (My gaze is harmful)."
नहिं विश्वास उमा उर भयऊ। शनि सों बालक देखन कह्यऊ।
Meaning: However, Mother Parvati did not believe Shani Dev's words and insisted that he look at the child.
पड़तहिं शनि दृगकोण प्रकाशा। बालक सिर उड़ि गयो अकाशा।
Meaning: As soon as a fraction of Shani Dev's sidelong glance fell upon the child, the baby's head severed from the body and flew into the sky.
गिरिजा गिरी विकल ह्वै धरणी। सो दुख दशा गयो नहिं वरणी।
Meaning: Seeing this horrifying event, Mother Parvati collapsed to the ground in sheer agony. The profound grief she felt at that moment cannot be described in words.
हाहाकार मच्यो कैलाशा। शनि कीन्हों लखि सुत का नाशा।
Meaning: A massive uproar of sorrow echoed throughout Mount Kailash upon seeing that Shani had destroyed the son of Shiva and Parvati.
तुरत गरुड़ चढ़ि विष्णु सिधाये। काटि चक्र सो गजशिर लाये।
Meaning: Instantly, Lord Vishnu departed riding on Garuda, severed the head of an elephant (Gajasura) with his Sudarshana Chakra, and brought it back.
बालक के धड़ ऊपर धारयो। प्राण मंत्र पढ़ि शंकर डारयो।
Meaning: The elephant's head was placed upon the child's torso, and Lord Shiva chanted powerful mantras to breathe life back into him.
नाम गणेश शम्भु तब कीन्हें। प्रथम पूज्य बुद्धि निधि वर दीन्हें।
Meaning: Then Lord Shiva named him 'Ganesha' and granted him the supreme boon of being 'the first to be worshipped' and the ultimate treasure of wisdom.
बुद्धि परीक्षा जब शिव कीन्हा। पृथ्वी कर प्रदक्षिणा लीन्हा।
Meaning: Once, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati decided to test the intellect of their sons (Ganesha and Kartikeya) by asking them to encircle the entire earth.
चले षडानन भरमि भुलाई। रचे बैठि तुम बुद्धि उपाई।
Meaning: Shadanana (Kartikeya) immediately set off on his vehicle to travel around the earth, but you sat right there and used your intellect to devise a brilliant solution.
चरण मातु पितु के धर लीन्हें। तिनके सात प्रदक्षिण कीन्हें।
Meaning: You simply held the feet of your parents (Shiva and Parvati) and walked around them seven times (believing that the entire universe resides at the feet of one's parents).
धनि गणेश कहिं शिव हिय हर्ष्यो। नभ ते सुरन सुमन बहु वर्ष्यो।
Meaning: Deeply delighted by your immense wisdom, Lord Shiva embraced you saying, "Blessed are you, Ganesha!" and the deities showered abundant flowers from the heavens.
तुम्हारी महिमा बुद्धि बड़ाई। शेष सहस मुख सके न गाई।
Meaning: O Lord! Even the serpent king Sheshanaga, with his thousand mouths, cannot adequately sing the praises of your greatness and supreme intellect.
मैं मति हीन मलीन दुखारी। करहुं कौन विधि विनय तुम्हारी।
Meaning: I am completely devoid of intelligence, impure, and full of worldly sorrows. How can I possibly find the right way to pray to and praise you?
भजत राम सुन्दर प्रभुदासा। जग प्रयाग ककरा दुर्वासा।
Meaning: Ram Sundar Prabhudas (the author of this Chalisa) continuously sings your praises. (This devotion was penned in the village of Kakra near the Durvasa ashram in Prayagraj).
अब प्रभु दया दीन पर कीजे। अपनी भक्ति शक्ति कुछ दीजे।
Meaning: O Lord! Please shower your mercy upon this poor and helpless soul, and bless me with a fraction of your devotion and strength.
॥ दोहा (Doha) ॥
श्री गणेश यह चालीसा पाठ करै धर ध्यान।
नित नव मंगल गृह बसै लहै जगत सनमान।
Meaning: Whoever recites this Shri Ganesh Chalisa with profound devotion and a focused mind will have new blessings and happiness reside in their home every day, and they will attain immense respect throughout the world.
संबंध अपना सहस्र दश ऋषि पंचमी दिनेश।
पूरण चालीसा भयो मंगल मूर्ति गणेश।
Meaning: On the auspicious day of Rishi Panchami, a Sunday, in the Samvat year referenced here, this Chalisa dedicated to Mangalmurti Lord Ganesha was successfully completed.

vighna harana mangala karana jaya jaya girijaalaala.

mangala bharana karana shubha kaajoo.
