It was with Lord Ganesha's blessings that Vishwamitra became a Brahmarshi from a Rajarshi. This story is about how it unfolded.

Vishwamitra's father was Gaadhi. When Vishwamitra grew up, Gaadhi handed over the kingdom to him and left to do tapas. That is as per Ashrama dharma; vanaprastha ashrama. Once Vishwamitra was hunting. He became hungry and thirsty. He came to Vasishta Maharshi's ashrama, with a good number of soldiers. Vishwamitra paid respects to Vasishta and told that they were all hungry. Vasishta Maharshi had Kamadhenu, Nandini with him. Kamadhenu will give whatever you ask for. ....

Kamadhenu and Kalpavriksha, they both have this capability.

Nandini provided tasty food for everyone.

Vishwamitra thought; what is such a cow doing in the forest!

If I have her with me, then a lot of good can happen to my people.

I can get food, clothes for all my subjects.

So Vishwamitra requested Vasishta: please give Nandini to me.

Vasishta refused.

Vishwamitra was king; he ordered the soldiers to take her with them forcefully.

Nandini turned the soldiers to ashes in no time.

Vishwamitra himself started lashing her with a whip trying to take her with him.

Nandini created an army from her own body and big fight ensued between the two armies.

Vishwamitra’s army perished.

He returned to the palace.

Fully disappointed.

Frustrated.

Realizing that muscle power is nothing before spiritual power.

He decided to observe tapas to gain spiritual power.

He did tapas for 100 years in the forest and propitiated Lord Shiva.

The Lord gave him very many divine weapons.

With the divine weapons and a much bigger army, Vishwamitra again attacked Vasishtha's ashrama.

Vasishta Maharshi took the divine weapon called Brahma Danda and with that defeated Vishwamitra and his entire army.

Vishwamitra thought the power of the Kshatriya even with divine weapons such as Agneyaastra is nothing in front of the spiritual power of the Brahmin.

I should become a Brahmin myself.

For this, he went to the forest again and started observing tapas.

He chanted Gayatri mantra for 10,000 years without food.

Brahma Deva appeared before Vishwamitra asked: what do you want?

Vishwamitra said: give me Brahmanatwa.

Brahma Deva said: not enough, do more tapas.

This kept on happening.

Brahma came ten times and every time said: do more tapas, not enough.

The tapas was so intense that the whole world heated up and the heat was unbearable.

Vishwamitra then declared: because of the power of my tapas, I have become a Brahmarshi, the greatest among Brahamarshis.

A Rishi who is a Kshatriya is Rajarshi.

A Rishi who is a Brahmana is Brahmarshi.

Nobody had the guts to challenge him.

But Vasishta said: no he is still a Rajarshi.

Enraged, Vishwamitra attacked Vasistha Maharshi.

He could do nothing to Vasishta.

Totally frustrated.

Vishwamitra started doing tapas again, to gain more power.

Sage Yajnavalkya came to Vishwamitra.

Vishwamitra paid respects to him and said: please tell me the purpose of your visit.

Please order me what to do.

Yajnavalkya said: I have come for you.

I came to know that you are sad.

Tell me what it is, I will help you.

Yes, I am sad.

I have done so much but I have not become a Brahmin.

Vasishta insulted me in front of everyone calling me a Rajarshi.

Yajnavalkya said: you will become a Brahmin, a Brahmarshi, provided you discard your arrogance and stop competing with Vasishta.

Then, take refuge in Lord Ganesha.

Only he can remove the obstacles in you becoming a Brahmana.

Keep on chanting Ganeshaya Namaha.

So far. you have been chanting Gayatri to gain power, to become more powerful than Vasishta.

Now you start chanting Gayatri dedicating it to Lord Ganesha.

Gayatri is the mother of Veda, she is the Veda Mata.

Omkara is the father of Veda.

Don’t you see the shape of Lord Ganesha's head?

It looks like Omkara.

Dedicate Gayatri to Lord Ganesha.

Let the mother and father be together.

Then the result that you are longing for will be born out of their union.

Vishwamitra did as Yajanavalkya instructed him.

Within a short span of time, Brahma Deva came again and made him a Brahmarshi.

Vasishta also acknowledged the elevation of his.

From that time onwards, Vishwamitra became an ardent devotee of Lord Ganesha
