Consorts Of Ganesha

This discourse tells about the two consorts of Lord Ganesha, Siddhi, and Buddhi- achievement, and intelligence.

What is the favorite color of Lord Ganesha?

Red. This is mentioned in Ganesha Atharva Sheersha. Raktam- his color itself is red. Raktavasasam- his clothes are red. Raktagandhanuliptangam- his anointment is red sandal paste. Raktapushpaih supujitam- he is worshiped with red flowers.

We have been seeing how Lord Ganesha took birth as the manasputra of Brahma as per Brahma's wish.

Dambhsura had conquered all the worlds and ousted all devas from there.

They were all living in the forest.

They all prayed to Lord Ganesha seeking his intervention.

The Lord appeared in Brahma's mind and came out.

He told Brahma: I am your son.

Brahma performed jatakarma and namakarana samskara for him.

Savitri devi, Brahmi breast fed him.

He grew up playing around in the forest.

When he became two years old, the Lord asked him:

Why are we here in the forest? Brahma told him that we are all ousted from our own worlds by Dambhasura.

The Lord became angry.

He said: I will defeat that Asura and restore the power and position of all Devas.

The Lord mounted his vehicle, the lion.

The Lord's vehicle in Vakratundavatara is lion.

And along with his consorts Siddhi and Buddhi accompanied by all the Devas proceeded towards the capital of Dambhasura.

First the Lord sent Indra as a peace messenger to Dambhasura.

Indra told him: give us back our worlds, Lord Vakratunda will spare your life.

Otherwise he will kill you.

Dambhasura did not oblige.

He said: I will face him in the battle ground on the 5th day from today.

But then Dambhasura had wisdom.

He approached Shukracharya and explained the situation to him.

Shukracharya made him understand.

That is no ordinary Deva.

He is the all-powerful Parabrahma, Paramatma.

If he says he will kill you, he will kill you.

You stand no chance.

So better surrender to him.

Dambhasura will not go against the advice of his guru.

But then, he wanted to know more about Lord Vakratunda.

Particularly why he has two consorts.

Shukracharya said: they are Siddhi and Buddhi Siddhi means achievement.

Siddhi is that shakti of the Lord which makes everyone to work.

You work because there is a goal, you want to achieve it.

Even routine work such as cooking.

You cook because you know that you and your family members are going to be hungry in some time.

You want to satisfy that hunger.

When you cook, feed them, feed yourself, satisfy the hunger, then that goal is achieved.

A bee visits the flower to get honey.

Getting that honey is the goal and the bee achieves it by putting effort.

Setting goals and achieving them, that is how the whole world functions.

This shakti of the Lord is called Siddhi.

If goals and their achievement are not there, then all actions in the world stop.

The world itself will stop.

Selfish or selfless, all actions are based on goals.

The other shakti of the Lord is Buddhi, intelligence.

Intelligence is properly organized, efficiently organized knowledge.

To achieve a goal, just putting effort is not enough.

You have to put the right kind of effort, right quantity and quality of effort.

Then only the goal is achieved.

The effort has to be intelligent.

From point A to point B if you have to go, then it has to be in that particular direction.

Walking in any direction will not take you from point A to point B.
Knowing this is Buddhi, intelligence.

These two shaktis are the consorts of the Lord.

Achievement of goals and intelligence.

That is why we pray to Lord Ganesha for knowledge and success.

Because they are his shaktis, they are under his command.

Then Dambhasura wanted to know why the Lord has taken the side of the Devas.

If he is Parabrhama, then all are equal to him.

They are all different manifestations of he himself.

Shukracharya said: he doesn't take anybody's side.

He wants balance.

If Devas become over powerful, he would take the side of the Asuras.

If Asuras become over powerful, he would take the side of the Devas.

He is only interested in restoring balance between Devas and Asuras.

Balance between dharma and adharma.

Dambhasura went and prostrated before the Lord and asked for achanchala bhakti at the Lord' feet.

Lord Vakratunda granted him achanchala bhakti.

And also granted him the same wish that he granted to Matsarasura.

Dambhasura as a ruler will protect Lord Ganesha's devotees.

But if someone neglects to worship the Lord at the beginning of any venture, then Dambhasura can take over and destroy that venture with his asuri character which is arrogance.

He will infuse arrogance into that person.

He will behave recklessly and will end up destroying the venture himself.

This is the consequence of not worshiping Lord Ganesha at the beginning.

You will become arrogant, you will develop sense of competition, dambha of Dambhasura matsara buddhi of Matsarasura.

You will lose your wisdom and discretion and end up destroying the venture yourself under the influence of asuri these shaktis.
