What are the Indian Values Children should Learn?

There are some values that are important for everyone. They are present in every culture, country, and society. These values include truth, love, fairness, respect, courage, compassion, self-reliance, discipline, and purity.

In India, we have some special values. These values come from Sanatana Dharma. Our scriptures and gurus have always taught us these values. They want every child to learn them. Some of these values are also common everywhere. But Sanatana Dharma has a deeper understanding of them. These values have been important for millions of years.

We can divide these values into two groups: Yamas and Niyamas. There are five Yamas and five Niyamas.

Five Yamas

  1. Ahimsa - Non-violence, not hurting others.
  2. Satya - Always telling the truth and behaving honestly.
  3. Asteya - Not taking what belongs to others.
  4. Brahmacharya - Controlling physical desires.
  5. Aparigraha - Not collecting too many things.

Yamas are about self-control. They help us control our natural tendencies, like lying, taking what is not ours, hurting others, and wanting too much. Children should learn these values and how to practice them.

Five Niyamas

Niyamas are about bringing good practices into our lives. Yamas are like controlling the car to stay on the road. Niyamas are like having a clear plan for the journey. They give our life a goal and purpose.

  1. Shaucha - Cleanliness, both outside and inside.
  2. Santosha - Being happy and content.
  3. Tapas - Working hard and focusing on goals.
  4. Swadhyaya - Always learning new things.
  5. Ishwara Pranidhana - Belief in God.

We must teach children both Yamas and Niyamas. But the best way to teach them is by demonstrating. As parents, we must practice these values ourselves. Stories can inspire children, but they must see these values in action at home. Only then will they learn and follow them.
