Verse 1
I bow to you, O Sharada Devi, who resides in Kashmir. I pray to you every day. Please give me the gift of knowledge.
First understand the context. Sharada is another name for Saraswati. She is especially worshipped in the Kashmir region, where the famous Sharada Peeth temple once stood. This verse is a direct, humble request from the devotee to the goddess of learning.
Verse 2
She is faith, memory, and intelligence. She is the goddess of speech and the beloved of Brahma. She lives on the tip of the tongue of her devotees. She gives the quality of inner calm and other virtues.
Here is what this means. The verse is saying that Saraswati is not just a deity you worship from outside. She lives inside you, on the tip of your tongue, meaning she expresses herself every time you speak with wisdom, clarity, or devotion.
Verse 3
I bow to her whose hair is adorned with the mark of the moon. She is Bhavani, and she is like a river of nectar that cools the burning pain of worldly existence.
Now look at the deeper point. Life in this world brings suffering, anxiety, and restlessness. The goddess, like a cool river of nectar, gives relief from all of that. Knowledge and devotion are presented here as healing forces.
Verse 4
Salutations always to Bhadrakali and to Saraswati. Salutations also to all the branches of knowledge including the Vedas, the Vedangas, and Vedanta.
There is an important detail here. The verse bows not only to the goddess but also to knowledge itself. This tells us that in this tradition, knowledge is sacred. It is not just a tool. It is divine.
Verse 5
She is the form of Brahman, the highest reality. She is eternal light. She is the supreme goddess over all forms of knowledge. Salutations again and again to that Vani, the goddess of speech.
Here is what this means. The verse places Saraswati at the highest level of spiritual reality. She is not just a deity of schools and books. She is Brahman itself, taking the form of light and sound and knowledge.
Verse 6
Without her, the entire world would always be like the living dead. She is the goddess who presides over all knowledge. Salutations to that Saraswati.
Now look at the deeper point. A life without knowledge or wisdom is described as living death. The body is alive but there is no real understanding, no purpose, no awareness. The goddess of knowledge is what makes life truly alive.
Verse 7
Without her, the entire world would always be like the mute and the mad. She is the goddess who presides over speech. Salutations to that Vani.
There is another important detail here. Two conditions are described: being mute, meaning unable to express, and being mad, meaning unable to think clearly. Without the goddess of speech and knowledge, human beings fall into one or both of these states. Right speech and right understanding are her gifts.
This entire hymn is built on one central idea. Knowledge, speech, and wisdom are not human achievements. They are divine gifts. Saraswati is the living presence behind every word spoken with clarity, every thought held with understanding, and every life lived with purpose. To bow to her is to recognize that what is highest in us comes from something greater than us.
