What Vishnu Has to Say About Shiva

You must have heard of Daksha Yaga, where Daksha neglected his own son-in-law, Lord Shiva. He did not invite Shiva to the yaga. Unable to bear the insult meted out to her husband at the yaga vedi, Sati Devi immolated herself.

Enraged, Lord Shiva’s gana set out to destroy Daksha’s yaga. At that time, Daksha went to Sri Hari and prayed:

'Oh Lord of lords, you are the savior of those in trouble, a treasure of kindness. You must save me and my yajna.'

'Because yajna is your own embodiment, you are yajna itself, the protector of yajna. Please ensure that this yajna is not halted or destroyed.'

Sri Hari responded:

'Listen, Daksha, I will tell you a profound tatwa. This secret is as powerful as a maha mantra. Understand and observe it, for it will always help you and bring happiness.'

'You insulted Lord Shiva due to ignorance of the truth. He is Sakaladheeshwara, the controller of everything, the Paramatma, the Parabrahma.'

'If Lord Shiva is insulted or neglected, all endeavors fail, and dangers arise at every step.'

Sri Hari continued:

'Wherever those worthy of respect are not respected, and those unworthy are honored, three things prevail—poverty, mishaps, and death.'

'By all means, Shankara must be revered. Neglecting Mahadeva has brought you grave danger.'

'Even we, the lords of the universe, cannot save you from the trouble you have created for yourself.'

Daksha pleaded:

'But I started this yajna relying entirely on your strength. You are the ultimate authority over the success of good deeds.'

'Oh Lord, are you not the overseer of actions, the protector of yajnas, and the ruler over even Brahma?'

'You are Sakala Prabhu. None other than you can save me and my yajna.'

Sri Hari replied:

'Yes, I have pledged to protect dharma under all circumstances, and I stand by that promise.'

'Oh Daksha, listen to me. Abandon your wickedness now.'

Sri Hari clarified that he protects dharma, not adharma. He called Daksha’s actions evil.

Daksha justified himself:

'Your wickedness, Daksha, in insulting Mahadeva, has left no one capable of protecting you from his wrath. Even those who try to protect you will face trouble.'

'Do you not understand what should be done and what should not be done?'

Sri Hari elaborated on a fundamental truth:

'Hard work, perseverance, knowledge, skill, experience—these are all essential. But they only help in performing the action properly. The result is not in your hands.'

A surgeon, for instance, may possess all these qualities, but whether the patient survives or improves is not under his control.

'Mahadeva alone is the provider of the results of all actions. Without his blessing, nothing auspicious can happen.'

'For those devoted to Ishwara and at peace with him, Mahadeva always grants favorable results.'

'Those who deny God’s role in everything and rely solely on knowledge are destined for suffering for countless Kalpas.'

Finally, Sri Hari warned:

'How can you forget this eternal truth, Daksha, with your wicked mind?'

This underscores the meaning of:

'Your control is only over the performance of karma, not its outcomes.'

Recognizing the divine hand in all results is wisdom. Sri Hari emphasized that without Mahadeva’s blessings, nothing auspicious can happen. Those who deny Mahadeva’s greatness, calling him a demi-God, are far from protection by Sri Hari.

  • Daksha insulted Shiva by not inviting him to the yajna, leading Sati to immolate herself and Shiva’s ganas to attack the sacrifice.

  • In fear, Daksha prayed to Vishnu to protect him and his yajna, calling Vishnu the preserver of dharma and the embodiment of yajna.

  • Vishnu reminded Daksha that he had insulted Shiva, who is Sakaladheeshwara (Lord of all) and Paramatma. Without honoring Shiva, no action succeeds.

  • Neglecting the truly worthy and honoring the unworthy brings poverty, fear, and death. Respect for Mahadeva is non-negotiable.

  • Even Vishnu declared that he could not save Daksha from the consequences of insulting Shiva.

  • Vishnu explained that effort, skill, and knowledge only help in doing work; the result is decided by Ishwara, specifically Shiva.

  • True devotees of Ishwara who act in peace and devotion receive favorable results, while those who rely only on dry knowledge face endless suffering.

  • The teaching aligns with the Gita: one has control over karma (action), never over its phala (result).

  • Recognizing the divine hand in outcomes is wisdom; denying it is ignorance.

What did Vishnu tell Daksha about insulting Shiva?
He said Daksha had acted out of ignorance, failing to see Shiva as the supreme controller and Paramatma. By dishonoring Shiva, Daksha had invited failure and calamity into every aspect of his work. Respect for Mahadeva is essential for success.

Why does dishonoring the truly worthy cause disaster?
Because it disturbs the balance of dharma. When the great are disrespected and the small are exalted, the very fabric of cosmic order is shaken, and the results manifest as fear, poverty, and death.

Is this not favoritism toward Shiva?
No, it is recognition of reality. If one cuts the root of a tree and still waters the branches, the tree cannot live. Shiva is that root — neglecting him means cutting off the source of sustenance.

Why did Vishnu refuse to save Daksha outright?
Because even he cannot protect one who stands against dharma. Daksha’s arrogance and insult to Shiva made his yajna adharmic, and protecting adharma contradicts Vishnu’s own pledge.

Can devotion to Vishnu alone bypass the need to honor Shiva?
No, because the two are not in opposition. Vishnu himself declared that without Shiva’s blessing, no yajna or action can succeed. To neglect Shiva is to neglect dharma.

Is this not contradictory — Vishnu being supreme yet saying he cannot save Daksha?
It is not contradiction but principle. Supremacy does not mean arbitrariness. Even the supreme sustainer abides by the law of dharma. He protects order, not the whims of men.

What is the role of effort in karma according to Vishnu?
Effort, knowledge, and skill are vital, but they only enable proper performance of action. The outcome is beyond personal control and rests in Ishwara’s will.

If results are not in our control, why act at all?
Because action is our responsibility. Just as a farmer must till and sow even though rainfall is uncertain, one must act rightly and leave the results to the divine.

Is this fatalism — saying everything is predestined?
No, it is realism. Your effort shapes the quality of your action, but the outcome depends on larger forces, including divine sanction. It keeps you diligent yet humble, not fatalistic.

How does devotion to Ishwara affect results?
Those who act with peace and devotion toward Ishwara receive auspicious outcomes, as Mahadeva grants the fruit of actions. Devotion harmonizes personal effort with divine will.

Why is denying God’s role considered dangerous?
Because it reduces action to ego-driven striving, ignoring the larger truth of dependence on the divine. This breeds arrogance and leads to long cycles of suffering.

But does not knowledge alone empower man enough?
Knowledge without recognition of the divine is incomplete. A surgeon may know every technique, yet whether a patient survives is not his control. Knowledge must walk hand in hand with surrender.
