When to Do Ghata Sthapana for Navaratri
We will discuss some points about ghata sthapana of Navaratri — when to start Navaratri.
In all our rituals, timing is important.
sukha dukkha karam karma shubhashubha...
When you are going to start a karma, a ritual will also decide what you are going to get out of it.
Start at an auspicious prescribed time, you will get sukha out of it.
Start at the wrong time, you will get dukha out of it.
Karma is the same, karma is auspicious, but the outcome will also depend on the timing.
Navaratri starts on the pratipada of the lunar month Ashwina.
If you look at the panchanga of a particular day, the tithi of that day at sunrise will be written there.
A tithi can end and next tithi can start any time during the day or night also.
What we should see is that the tithi at sunrise should be pratipada or prathama.
Because for starting Navaratri puja, the day which has even a bit of amavasya should be avoided.
Let's say at sunrise for 5 minutes amavasya is there, then for the whole day pratipada — this cannot be taken.
At sunrise, even if pratipada is there for a couple of hours, that day should be taken for starting of Navaratri.

Suppose pratipada is there at sunrise on two consecutive days — then which one to take?
If the first day has complete absence of amavasya, then you should take that.
One very important fact about Navaratri is that in Navaratri, puja of Devi is most important.
Some people observe fasting during Navaratri and do not do physical worship of Devi — this will not yield any benefit.
Ideally, the ghata sthapana should be done within 4 hours from sunrise.
If there is Chitra nakshatra or Vaidhruti yoga on that day, then you should do ghata sthapana after they are over.
If they are there throughout the day, then you can do ghata sthapana at noon time or later, before sunset, but ghata sthapana never in the night.
