There Is Nothing Wrong With Idol Worship

There is some propaganda against idol worship

Murti Puja

Not only from outside Sanatana Dharma, that is understandable, even from within Sanatana Dharma

These objections vary from it is not there in the Vedas to idolatry is the lowest form of spirituality

We are not getting into whether it is there in the Vedas or not

Only what is worth pointing out here is that those who vehemently argue that idol worship is not there in the Vedas, do not know what is there in the Vedas, or What they think to be Vedas are not even Vedas

We are not even today going to try and prove that idol worship is there in Sanatana Dharma by quoting umpteen number of scriptures

We are also not going to try and analyze how far this statement That this is a lower form of spirituality and ours is a higher form of spirituality, how far this would stand before even a brain of average intelligence? Aren't we all irrespective of caste, creed, and religion, age or gender, idol recognizers, image recognizers? We see that green round icon with a white border and a white telephone handset inside, we instantly recognize that it is WhatsApp

Is that symbol WhatsApp? No, that is just a few pixels of light

WhatsApp sits in millions of mobile phones and in gigabytes of server memory

JioByte is the highest unit of memory

So many brains and so many programming hours have gone into making of WhatsApp

So many millions make their life and some even spoil their life around this social media

WhatsApp is a culture

WhatsApp is a medical issue for some

WhatsApp is a law and order problem for someone else

See the entity that is so colossal, represented by a small green circle and instantly recognized

Do we think about all this when we see that icon? Not necessarily

But we connect instantly

This is what this symbol stands for

The moment you have to send a message to someone, you reach out for that icon on your mobile phone

Suppose you had to write programs for sending messages

Put your personal message within a Java code or a Python code before you could send it across

How many of us would have been able to do that? We reach out for that icon WhatsApp because it is simple, easy to do, and it works

Your message goes across

It reaches the person for whom it is meant

That is the reason these apps are created, for their simplicity

So if a programmer says that this platform called WhatsApp is inferior, you people, the users don't know what goes on behind all these, there is a lot of algorithm and arguments and control flows and object code behind all this

Will you really bother? How does it really matter as long as it works? Idols to a large extent are like these icons, making it easy for you to connect to divinity in a simple, straightforward manner

and it works

It works efficiently for millions and millions

You can have your own method which suits you better

But are you really good enough to give grades to another system which you don't even know about?

  • Why is the comparison between a mobile app icon and a Murti significant?
The icon is a portal. Just as a few pixels of green light represent a colossal entity involving millions of lines of code, servers, and global infrastructure, a Murti represents the infinite, formless Divine. We do not worship the stone or the pixels themselves; we use the symbol to instantly connect our consciousness to the vast reality behind it. It simplifies the complex, making the infinite accessible to the finite mind.
  • Is Murti Puja really a lower form of spirituality as some critics claim?
Labeling it as lower is a misunderstanding of human cognitive function. In the world of technology, we use Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) precisely because they are more efficient than command-line coding for the average person. If a system works efficiently for millions to reach a state of devotion and peace, it is a superior technology of the consciousness. Efficiency and results define the height of a practice, not its complexity.
  • Does the worshiper believe the Murti is the entirety of God?
Just as a user knows the WhatsApp icon is not the entire internet or the company itself, a seeker knows the Murti is a focused point of contact. It is a designated "address" for the Divine. While the Divine is omnipresent (all-pervading), the Murti serves as a specific "terminal" where the human mind can concentrate its scattered energy.
  • How does the "Algorithm of Devotion" work behind a Murti?
Just as a programmer hides complex control flows behind a simple button, the Rishis encoded deep psychological and cosmic truths into the form of a Murti. The posture, the weapons held, and the specific geometry of the image act as a visual language. This "object code" of spirituality triggers specific shifts in the subconscious mind of the practitioner, bypasses intellectual hurdles, and facilitates a direct emotional experience.
  • Why not just meditate on the formless (Nirguna) from the start?
To send a message without an app, you would need to write the raw code yourself. Very few have the technical mastery or time to interact with the universe at that raw level. For the majority, the "App" of Murti Puja provides a tested, user-friendly interface. It ensures that the "message" of our prayer actually reaches its destination without getting lost in the noise of a restless mind.
  • What is the "hidden aspect" of the Murti that critics overlook?
The overlooked aspect is the Prana Pratishtha, or the consecration process. This is akin to "activating" a piece of hardware with software. Through specific sound frequencies (Mantras) and intent, the physical material is tuned to a higher vibration. It is no longer just stone; it becomes a functional tool for spiritual resonance, much like a battery that has been charged.
  • Can someone reach the highest spiritual state through symbols?
The symbol is the launchpad. As the connection deepens, the devotee often moves from the symbol to the feeling, and finally to the realization that the same Divinity resides within themselves. The Murti is the bridge. To discard the bridge before you have crossed the river, out of intellectual pride, is a strategic error in the journey of the soul.
  • Why does Sanatana Dharma have so many different idols?
Different people have different "operating systems" or temperaments (Gunas). Just as we have different apps for music, finance, or navigation, different Murtis represent different facets of the one Truth. This diversity allows every individual to find a "User Interface" that resonates with their specific emotional and psychological makeup, ensuring no one is excluded from the spiritual process.
  • Does the simplicity of idol worship make it "blind faith"?
On the contrary, it is a highly conscious use of the mind’s natural tendency to associate forms with meanings. We are all "image recognizers" by nature. Utilizing this natural faculty to progress spiritually is a scientific application of psychology. True blind faith is criticizing a system that one has not tested or understood at its foundational level.
  • What is the ultimate "output" of this system?
The output is the transformation of the individual. If the icon on the screen allows you to communicate with a loved one across the world, it has fulfilled its purpose. Similarly, if the Murti allows a person to cultivate compassion, discipline, and a sense of the sacred in a chaotic world, the system is a resounding success. It is the result—the connection to the Divine—that matters most.
