The Importance of Focusing

Veda gives a lot of importance to the concept of focus, to the extent of calling focus a divinity, a devata, Shraddha Devi. Veda says focus, focusing is behind everything that happens in the world. The importance of Shraddha or focus is revealed in so many Veda mantras.

Here, it is not just mental focus. It is about a perpetual, exclusive relationship between two objects or two entities. Why is the earth revolving around the sun? Because it is focused on the sun. It is not looking here and there. It is not breaking that tie and going elsewhere. What will happen if the earth breaks this tie, breaks this focus, and goes elsewhere? It will not get the sunlight anymore, and we will all freeze to death. Or it will go and hit another planet. So, this order that the earth should operate in a certain way is achieved through the power called focus. This is Shraddha.

The sun focuses on the sea and evaporates water; then rain clouds are formed, and rain happens. What if the sun does not focus on the seas and instead focuses on forests? In some time, they will be destroyed. Again, focus—Shraddha.

A mother is feeding her infant. If she is not focused on where to put the food, in the infant’s mouth, then what will happen? If every time she has to search for where to place the food—in the eyes, in the ears, or on the palms—then what will happen? If her hand does not take the food from the plate straight to the child’s mouth, then what will happen? She is focused; that is how the feeding happens. The child grows. If she is not focused on the dosage of the medicine that she may have to give to the child at times, and she absentmindedly pours the whole bottle of medicine into the child’s mouth instead of half a teaspoon, then what happens? Can you imagine?

When you are cooking, if you are not focused, what happens? It will burn, it will be charred, and it will become useless. Our sages were in awe when they realized the role of focus in everything that we do. In fact, focus is one of the major powers behind the running of the world.

If the signals are not able to focus on your particular mobile phone when a call is being made to you, will you get the call? So, behind technology also, there is this power called focus—Shraddha. Sages said this power to focus, the power of focus, is nothing less than a divine power. So, they started worshiping even focus as a devata, just like how they worshiped fire, air, and water as devatas.

Scriptures say that while creating the universe, the Parabrahma Paramatma focuses on one small area of himself. When he focuses there with mind, energy, and words are formed, and out of them, the universe comes into existence in that area.

Only people with focus will be able to achieve anything in life. Lack of focus, focus that keeps shifting, and focus on wrong things—all these three lead to failure.
