Kubera, the lord of wealth, was fond of luxury. He also had arrogance in his riches. To show off his wealth, he once planned a grand feast in Alakapuri. Devas, Siddhas, and Gandharvas were all invited to the event.
When Kubera arrived at Kailasa to invite Shiva and Parvati, Bhagavan smiled and said, 'Ganesha will come. He loves feasts.'
Excitedly, Kubera returned to Alakapuri with young Ganesha. Upon arriving, little Ganesha joyfully waddled around, shaking his chubby belly, accompanied by his mouse. After some time, Kubera, with great pride, invited him to partake in the grand feast. A lavish spread of rare delicacies and sweets had been prepared.
With folded hands, Kubera humbly said, 'Bhagavan, I hope this humble feast of mine satisfies you.'
Seeing Kubera’s false humility, Bhagavan smiled slightly and began eating. In no time, all the food placed in front of him was gone. As if still hungry, Bhagavan looked around. The kitchen became active again, and hundreds of cooks started preparing food once again. But as soon as the food was served, Bhagavan devoured everything.
Soon, the palace’s entire storage became empty. Grains, vegetables, and fruits from all the homes in Alakapuri were brought in large carts.
Within some time, there was not a single grain left in Alakapuri. Bhagavan turned to Kubera and said, 'I came to the lord of wealth’s feast with great expectations. Is that all? My hunger is still not satisfied.'
As everyone watched in shock, large tables and chairs began entering into Bhagavan’s mouth. The massive vessels from the kitchen also vanished into his stomach. Still unsatisfied, he started pulling apart the palace pillars and eating them. In no time, nothing remained of the grand palace - only an empty ground. Bhagavan then started walking towards the city.
Terrified, Kubera ran to Kailasa and fell at Shiva’s feet. 'Bhagavan, please save me! Alakapuri will soon be no more. Your son’s hunger knows no bounds!'
Shiva took a handful of flattened rice (poha) and handed it to Kubera, saying, 'Take this and offer it to Ganesha with love and humility.'
Kubera rushed back to Alakapuri and did as instructed, falling at Bhagavan’s feet and seeking forgiveness.
Bhagavan ate that one handful of flattened rice and said, 'Ah, now my hunger is satisfied.'
As soon as Bhagavan raised his hand, the palace and everything else returned to its original state.
After teaching Kubera that love and devotion, not luxury, please the divine, Bhagavan mounted his mouse and returned to Kailasa.
