Lord Shiva put up a condition. You observe brahmacharya and propitiate Agni Deva by continuously pouring ghee into the fire without breaking the flow even once.
If you do this, I will help you.
Shwetaki observed as Mahadeva told, and upon its completion, the Lord asked Rishi Durvasa to officiate the yajna planned by him.
The yajna completed successfully. Agni was very happy and satisfied, but due to continuous drinking of ghee for 12 years, Agni developed indigestion. He lost all his lustre. He became dull.
So, Agni went to Brahma and asked what to do.
Brahma told him to consume an entire forest named Khandava. Then he would be cured.
All the trees, plants, herbs, and animals of Khandava would become medicine that would cure his indigestion. Nothing else could help.
The king of Nagas, Takshaka, was Indra’s friend. So, whenever Agni approached to consume Khandava, Indra would cause rains and douse him.
Agni became weaker by the day.
As per Brahma’s advice, he assumed the form of a brahmin, approached Sri Krishna, and narrated his problem. Brahma had told him it was Nara and Narayana who had taken avataras as Arjuna and Krishna.
Bhagawan promised to help him. He wouldn’t say no to anyone who came to him for help.
He would try a trick or two to stop you from reaching him if you didn’t deserve his help. But if you were able to reach up to him, he would not say no to you. He could not say no to you. That was his helplessness.
Arjuna told Agni Deva, I have got many lethal weapons with me. But so far, I don’t have something that can keep up pace with my energy and aggression. None of my weapons are as efficient as me. My bow is not fast enough. My arrows are not sufficient in number. My horse and chariot are not fast enough.
Soma had given a powerful bow called Gandeeva to Varuna. Agni requested Varuna to hand over this bow to Arjuna and he obliged. This bow could never be broken. It was equal in power to a hundred thousand normal bows. Varuna also gave a quiver of arrows that would never become empty, and a powerful chariot and horses.
Bhagawan also, through his leela, got himself the chakra through Agni. The chakra was always his. But he liked to see others getting the satisfaction of offering something to him. Varuna also got the same satisfaction by offering the gada called Kaumodaki to Krishna.
Under the protection of Bhagawan and Arjuna, Agni started consuming Khandava.
Indra started heavy rains to douse the fire. In the blazing heat, those showers could not even reach down. They evaporated midway. Indra started cloudbursts, and the fire started getting weak.
Arjuna created an armour of arrows all around Khandava and on top of it. Water just couldn’t penetrate anymore.
Indra employed Aindrastra. Rains started pouring in trunks the size of pillars. There were storms, thunder, and lightning. Arjuna used Vayavya Astra and shattered the clouds causing rains. The sky became clear.
Indra himself, mounted on Airavata, attacked Sri Hari and Arjuna along with the entire army of Devas.
Terrible war ensued between Sri Hari and Arjuna on one side and all the other Devas on the other side.
All this was just to help Agni cure his indigestion, just because he sought refuge in Sri Hari.
Indra rained huge stones. Arjuna pulverized each and every stone with his arrows.
Indra lifted Mandara Parvata and banged it on Sri Hari and Arjuna. Arjuna broke it into thousands of pieces.
Finally, the Devas were defeated and they went back. Agni Deva consumed the entire Khandava forest and his health was restored.
Sri Hari stood by someone who sought his help, someone who took refuge in him. For something as simple as curing Agni’s indigestion, Sri Hari went to the extent of challenging Indra and his entire army of Devas.
Why does a vow matter in spiritual work?
A vow concentrates scattered will. Discipline is not decoration; it is the container that can hold grace.
What does a continuous offering symbolize?
Unbroken attention. When attention does not blink, ordinary acts turn sacramental.
Why does excess piety sometimes create imbalance?
Any single note, even a holy one, distorts when played too long. Wisdom is harmony, not volume.
Why do obstacles rise just when one chooses the right path?
Because truth attracts resistance. Friction reveals whether resolve is real or borrowed.
Is help from the divine unconditional?
Access is conditional; fidelity is not. Cross the threshold with sincerity and help does not waver.
What proves worthiness: purity or perseverance?
Perseverance. Purity grows from long obedience; it is the fruit, not the entry ticket.
Why do protectors clash with other protectors?
Duties can intersect without malice. Justice often lives at the edge where goods conflict.
What defeats torrents of adversity: power or method?
Method. Right form channels force; raw strength without form leaks.
Why accept offerings when nothing is needed?
To heal the giver. True acceptance lets the heart practice surrender without humiliation.
Is surrender the same as passivity?
No. Surrender aligns freedom with the Highest; passivity abandons freedom to chance.
How should one read miracles and weapons in sacred stories?
As signs for the inner life. Insight is the real weapon; clarity is the real shield.
Where is the line between compassion and enabling?
Compassion serves growth; enabling serves stagnation. Help that weakens is not help.
What is the ethical core of taking sides?
Stand with refuge-seekers who commit to truth. Loyalty without truth is merely noise.
Why does strategy outrank spectacle in spiritual struggle?
Ego loves spectacle. Spirit favors precision, timing, and restraint.
What is the meaning of consuming a ‘forest’ within?
Burn the dense tangle of habits into fuel for awareness. Digestion is transformation.
How do vows, offerings, and protection fit together?
Vows prepare, offerings open, protection sustains. Together they form a path, not isolated acts.
What does victory look like at the highest level?
Health restored to the whole. Not triumph over someone, but balance returned to everything involved.
