Prahlada Tests the Patience of His Father

Prahlada was his son. Bhakta Prahlada, the topmost among devotees. You talk about bhakti, the foremost name is Prahlada.

Prahlada was learning in a gurukula. One day he, along with his guru, went to Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu asked him, what all have you learned so far?

Prahlada said – as per your order, I will tell you what all I have learned so far. Before that, I am offering namaskara to that Achyuta, who is devoid of beginning, middle and end, who is the cause of everything, who sustains everything, and in the end dissolves everything.

Hiranyakashipu became furious. He started screaming at the guru – is this what you have taught my son, don’t you know that Vishnu is my sworn enemy?

Guru said, this is not something I have taught him. He learned it from elsewhere.

Hiranyakashipu asked Prahlada – tell me who taught you all this? Your guru says, he didn’t teach you this.

Prahlada said –

शास्ता विष्णुरशेषस्य जगतो यो हृदि स्थितः
तमृते परमात्मानं तात कः केन शास्यते

Vishnu, Paramatma, who resides in the heart, is the teacher, adviser of the whole universe. Other than him, who else can teach anyone anything?

Hiranyakashipu said –

कोऽयं विष्णुः सुदुर्बुद्धे यं ब्रवीषि पुनः पुनः
जगतामीश्वरस्येह पुरतः प्रसभं मम

Who is this Vishnu you are sermonizing, that too in front of the lord of the whole universe? How dare you?

Prahlada replied – he cannot be described in words. The universe has manifested out of him. He is Parameshwara. He rules over you as well.

Hiranyakashipu shouted – what nonsense, someone above me? A ruler above me? I am the almighty, and who is this encroachee who is sitting in your heart and feeding you all this poison? Take him away and let this guru teach him properly the real facts.

Prahlada’s learning continued as ordered by Hiranyakashipu. Years passed.

Prahlada was called again in front of his father. Hiranyakashipu asked – have you learned anything new, have you learned the correct thing, or are you going to tell me some other story?

Prahlada said –

यतः प्रधानपुरुषौ यतश्चैतच्चराचरम्
कारणं सकलस्यास्य स नो विष्णुः प्रसीदतु

Hiranyakashipu became furious – kill him, there is no point keeping this boy alive now. He will destroy asura vamsha.

Prahlada said – but my Bhagavan is even there in weapons, how can I be harmed?

Hundreds of asuras attacked him with weapons. Nothing happened. He didn’t even feel the pain.

Hiranyakashipu said – if you refrain from this evil act of praising our enemy, I will give you protection.

  • What makes devotion feel dangerous to the ego?
Because devotion shifts the center from ‘me’ to ‘the truth’. Ego wants control and praise. Bhakti demands surrender and honesty. That clash creates heat.

  • Is there really a teacher inside the heart?
Conscience, reason, and quiet awareness act like an inner guide. A good outer teacher points you back to that inner clarity, not away from it.

  • How do I tell true learning from conditioning?
True learning makes you calmer, clearer, and kinder. Conditioning makes you reactive, scared, or arrogant. Track your mind after the lesson.

  • If the Divine is everywhere, what does that change?
It changes how you act. You treat people, tools, and even opponents with responsibility. Presence implies accountability.

  • Can loyalty to power conflict with dharma?
Yes. Power can demand obedience; dharma demands integrity. When they clash, choose what keeps you truthful and non-cruel.

  • Is fearlessness just stubbornness with a nicer name?
No. Stubbornness is ego defending itself. Fearlessness is calm conviction grounded in truth and compassion.

  • Why does praise of the Divine upset some people?
Because it challenges their claim to be the highest authority. When identity sits on a throne, any higher reference feels like a threat.

  • How does one speak truth to authority without hate?
State facts, keep your voice steady, and refuse insults. Firm, brief, and respectful beats loud and rude.

  • What protects a devotee in hostile situations?
Clarity of purpose, disciplined mind, and refusal to harm without cause. These reduce mistakes and invite wise help from others.

  • Is saying ‘the Divine is in weapons’ an excuse for violence?
No. It means even force is bound by moral law. Use of force is last resort, proportionate, and aimed at stopping harm, not feeding anger.

  • How do I test whether my faith is blind?
Ask for reasons, live the practices, watch outcomes over time. If it blocks inquiry or demands cruelty, drop it.

  • Why do tyrants hate questions?
Questions loosen fear. Fear keeps control in place. The moment minds inquire, control shakes.

  • What does it mean to be ‘topmost among devotees’ in practical life?
Consistency. Same values at home, work, and crisis. Cheerful service, stable mind, and zero show-off.

  • How do I cultivate inner steadiness like that?
Daily prayer or mantra, honest self-audit, study that stretches your mind, and small acts of courage. Repeat until it becomes your default.

  • Can a childlike mind be wiser than a trained adult?
Yes, when it is open, sincere, and uncorrupted by cynicism. Openness perceives truths that cleverness talks itself out of.

  • What is the clean way to handle an ‘enemy’ belief?
Understand it fairly, answer it with reasons, and let results speak. Mockery weakens your side.

  • Why does truth often sound disrespectful to the insecure?
Because truth removes the special pedestal. Insecurity reads equality as insult.

  • What is the quickest self-check before I speak in conflict?
Ask: Is it true, necessary, and kind? If any one fails, pause.

  • How do I turn devotion into daily action?
Serve someone, keep one promise, drop one bad habit, and study one page. Small, repeatable steps build unshakeable strength.
