The King’s Question
The king said: O Lord, you have described the various incarnations of Goddess Chandika.
Now, O Brahmin, you should tell me their primordial nature, the supreme essence.
The king wants to know the ultimate reality behind all the forms of the Goddess, not just stories.
Request for Worship Knowledge
Explain to me fully, O Brahmin, the form of the Goddess whom I am to worship, and the proper method of worship, so that I may comprehend it fully.
Emphasizes knowledge before worship: devotion must be guided by understanding.
Sage’s Assurance
The sage said: This secret is supreme and rarely spoken.
Since you are a devotee, O king, nothing shall be withheld from you.

Mahalakshmi as Supreme
Mahalakshmi is the primordial source of all.
She is the Supreme Goddess, consisting of the three guṇas (sattva, rajas, tamas).
She is both perceptible and imperceptible and pervades everything.
Mahalakshmi here represents Cosmic Energy (Prakriti), the source of all creation, sustenance, and destruction.
Symbols of Her Form
She holds the mace, sword, shield, drinking vessel, serpent, linga, and yoni atop her head, O king.
Each weapon or symbol represents a cosmic function: protection, destruction, creation, sustenance, and fertility.
Her Radiance
She shone like molten gold, adorned in gold, filling the emptiness of the universe with her radiance.
The goddess is described as pure energy filling the void, symbolizing primordial light.
Mahakali’s Form
Seeing the void of all the worlds, the Supreme Goddess assumed a terrible form composed of pure tamas.
She had dark eyes, protruding teeth, and a medium-sized body with large eyes.
Represents destructive, transformative energy—the cosmic aspect of Mahakali.
Arms and Ornaments
She had four arms adorned with sword, shield, and skulls, and a garland of skulls around her neck.
Symbols of power, destruction of ego, and cosmic authority.

Mahalakshmi said to the king: I will tell you the names corresponding to each action and power.
I am Mahamaya, Mahakali, Mahabhairavi, Hunger, Anger, Sleep, Thirst, the One-Woman Hero, and Kalaratri.
Each name reflects a cosmic function or aspect of the goddess.
Mahasarasvati

Holding a rosary, goad, veena, and book, she gave many names: Mahavidya, Mahavaṇi, Bharati, Vak, Sarasvati, Arya, Brahmi, Kama-dhenu, Vedagarbha, Sureshvari.
Represents knowledge, speech, and learning—the sattvic aspect of the goddess.
Creation of Paired Forms
Then Mahalakshmi said: Let Mahakali and Sarasvati be born as pairs, each corresponding to their appropriate forms.
This describes the divine principle of pairing: male-female cosmic energies manifest together, reflecting balance in creation.
Birth of Cosmic Couple
Having said this, Mahalakshmi herself created a pair.
They were Hiranyagarbha, radiant, male and female, seated on lotus thrones.
Hiranyagarbha represents the golden cosmic womb, the seed of creation, male and female energies seated on the lotus (purity and divine origin).
Brahma’s Creation
From Brahma, the male form called Virincha was born.
Shri-Lakshmi was the female, seated on the lotus, born as his consort.
Represents the cosmic creator pair: Brahma (creator) and Lakshmi (energy of creation).
Rudra and Gauri
Mahakali and Bharati (Sarasvati) were created as a pair.
I will now describe their forms and names.
This is the destruction-preservation pair, Rudra and Gauri, showing Tamas and Sattva in harmony.
Rudra and Shakti Forms
Neelakantha (blue-throated), red-armed, with white body, Chandrashekhara, was the male.
Mahakali and Sita were born as the female consorts.
Describes the cosmic male-female forms of Rudra-Shiva and his energy forms (Shakti).
The Triad of Knowledge
He was Rudra, Shankara, Sthanu, Kapardi, the three-eyed.
The female counterpart was the triad of knowledge (Vidya), language (Bhasha), and letters (Akshara).
The male deity embodies cosmic action, and the female embodies knowledge, speech, and creative energy.
Vishnu and Uma
Vishnu as the male and Uma as the female were born.
I will describe their names as well.
Vishnu (male) and Uma (female) show sustaining and empowering energies, the Rajas-Sattva principle in action.
Names of the Divine Couple

Transformation of Youth
Thus the young women immediately assumed their male forms.
Only those endowed with insight (jnani) can truly see these forms; others do not perceive them.
Highlights the hidden and revealed aspects of the divine, visible only to wise seers.
Assignment of Goddesses to Gods
To Brahma, Mahalakshmi was given as wife.
To Rudra, Gauri, to Vishnu, Lakshmi as consorts.
Shows the cosmic principle of Shakti complementing the male deities, sustaining creation.
Cosmic Function
Brahma, united with Sri, began creation from the cosmic egg.

Role of Lakshmi in Nurturing

The kingly duties, the cosmic tasks, all arose from the primordial egg.
All beings, moving and unmoving, were nurtured by Keshava (Vishnu) together with Lakshmi.
Shows that Lakshmi (prosperity and sustenance) enables life and activity in the universe.
Conclusion: Supreme Shakti
Mahalakshmi alone is eternal, the supreme goddess of all.
She is both formless and with form, bearing many names.
No other name can describe her truly.”
Final teaching: All goddesses are ultimately one supreme Shakti, manifesting in multiple forms and names, but fundamentally non-dual.
