Once in Kailasa, our dear Lord Shiva started narrating the Vedas to Parvathy Devi who was also listening very attentively.

He kept on narrating, on and on and on.

It never seemed to end.

Vedas are so vast.

Whatever the humanity knows today and what we are yet to know, everything is there in the Vedas, a trillion times of what we know today.

They are all there in the vedas.

You know, a great sage learned the vedas for thousand years and he exclaimed: if Vedas are an ocean, I have seen only one drop of it so far.

Vedas are not just about gods.

Physiology, Medicine, Astronomy, Physics, Psychology, Management principles, Mathematics: they are all there in the Vedas.

So the Lord kept on narrating and at one point of time Parvathy devi felt sleepy.

She yawned.

And lord shiva gets angry very fast.

He also calms down very fast, that is his nature.

The Lord said: you don’t deserve to hear all this.

You don’t have interest.

That’s why you are feeling sleepy.

You go and take birth on earth.

Parvathy Devi disappeared from Kailasa.

Soon, she was seen as an infant, a girl, lying under a tree.

But as soon as she disappeared, Bhagavan started becoming restless.

He can’t live without her for a moment.

They are so loving and caring towards each other.

And down on earth, a group of fishermen were passing by where Parvathy Devi was lying as a child.

When he saw the child, the chief of the fishermen got very excited: oh! look at this child.

How beautiful she is.

The Gods must have given her to me as a boon.

He took the child home.

His family and the whole village were happy to get her.

She was named Parvathy.

And there in Kailasa, Bhagavan didn’t know what to do.

What have I done?

I can’t live without her.

Nandi is the Lord’s vehicle and his devoted servant.

He saw the state of the Bhagavan.

This can’t continue for long.

By this time, Parvathy on earth had grown up into a beautiful girl and had attained the age to get married.

They started looking for a suitable groom for her.

Every youngster desired to get married to her.

But she is the daughter of the chief and so beautiful and intelligent.

She will marry only a brave and handsome boy.

Nandi approached the Lord and said: oh! Lord, why don’t you go there and get her back.

Bhagavan said : how is that possible?

She is about to get married.

She will only marry someone from the community, from the fisherman community.

Nandi knew what to do.

He went down to earth assuming the form of a huge shark.

Some fishermen were fishing.

When they saw the shark, they said: let’s catch him.

He is a huge fish.

But in no time, the shark attacked their boat and toppled it.

From then onwards, every day the shark started to attack the fishermen.

Whoever went to the sea for fishing, the shark would topple their boats.

The chief said: anyone who would end the threat of this shark, catch him, will get my daughter Parvathy in marriage.

Many eager youngsters tried.

They all failed.

They felt helpless.

They started praying to Lord Shiva for help.

Even Parvathy prayed to the Lord.

Lord Shiva became a fisherman and went down.

He went to the seashore, grabbed a net, and went into the sea.

Seeing his master coming, Nandi immediately surrendered and allowed himself to be caught.

The shark was brought to the shore.

All felt happy and relieved.

The chief said: I had made a promise, that I would give my daughter in marriage to whoever would catch this shark.

Will you accept her as your wife?

The Lord was so happy to hear this.

The marriage ceremony took place and the Lord returned to Kailasa with Parvathy Devi mounted on top of Nandi.

They do this to demonstrate so many things to us.

We can learn a lot from these legends.

You should never flare up in anger.

See what happened afterwards, the Lord only had to suffer the grief of Parvathy Devi gone away.

And see what Nandi did.

How smartly he solved the problem!

We should learn from all these stories.
