Have you heard the story that Lakshmi Devi had become a horse once?
Surya Bhagavan had a son called Revanta.
His horse was Ucchaishravas, the divine horse which came out during the churning of the ocean.
Once Revanata was coming towards Vaikuntha riding his horse to get darshan of Bhagavan.
Lakshmi Devi saw this from a distance and could not take her eyes off the horse.
She was so absorbed in its beauty.
Bhagavan asked her several times, who is coming, who is coming?
Devi didn't even hear.
Bhagavan became angry and cursed Lakshmi Devi.
You get distracted like ordinary women.
You don't deserve to be here with me.
You are carried away by a horse.
Better take birth as a horse itself, on earth.
Devi became very upset.
For such a small thing you cursed me.
I have been so dedicated to you.
Where has all your love gone?
Bhagavan said, ok this is not forever.
You can come back to Vaikuntha after a son is born to you on earth.
This was his master plan, you see.
He had something in mind.
Accordingly, Lakshmi Devi became a horse and came to earth.
Do you remember, Surya's wife Samjna also had become a horse once?
Ashwini Kumaras are her sons.
Lakshmi Devi went to the same place where Samjna had observed tapas and started observing tapas herself.
Devi was very sad, to be away from the Lord.
Unable to bear the separation.
But somehow, she should get a son.
Then only she will be able to go back to him.
Devi observed tapas for a thousand divine years.
Tapas to propitiate Mahadeva.
Even Mahadeva was surprised, why me?
So, when he appeared before her he asked?
The husband should be all in all for a woman.
And your husband is so great, why are you trying to please me, rather than him.
Devi said, there is hardly any difference between both of you.
Now Devi Bhagavata is giving a great principle here.
This is from the sixteenth chapter of the sixth skandha of Devi Bhagavata.
Devi is telling Mahadeva:
तव तस्य द्विधा भावो नास्ति नूनं कदादन।
There is no difference between you and him.
Mahadeva asked her, how do you know that?
I have heard that from my husband himself.
Once I saw Bhagavan meditating.
After he came out from samadhi, I asked him.
When I emerged from the ocean and looked around to see whom to take as my husband, among all the Devas present there I found you to be the greatest.
Now, whom are you praying to?
Is there someone greater than you that I don't know about?
Please tell me.
Bhagavan said, I was meditating upon Shiva.
He also meditates upon me.
We are so close to each other to such an extent that you can say we are one and the same.
शिवस्याहं प्रियः प्राणः शङ्करस्तु तथा मम।
उभयोरन्तरं नास्ति मिथः संसक्तचेतसोः॥
Bhagavan says,
नरकं यान्ति ते नूनं ये द्विषन्ति महेश्वरम्।
भक्ता मम विशालाक्षि सत्यमेतत् ब्रवीम्यहम॥
My own devotees if they harbor ill feelings towards Maheswara, they will go to naraka for sure.
Who all are involved in this conversation?
Vishnu, Lakshmi, and Shiva.
And look at our stupidity.
Go to google search and see.
All kinds of crazy questions!
Who is more powerful, Vishnu or Shiva?
Can Shiva kill Vishnu?
Can Vishnu kill Shiva?
Lakshmi Devi said: I will be able to go back only after I beget a son.
I am here on earth, he is in Vaikuntha.
How will this ever happen?
Mahadeva said, don't worry, I will make it happen.
I will make him assume the form of a horse and approach you with passion.
But let me tell you, you ended up in this trouble because you never stayed focused on Jagadamba Mahamaya.
Those who have Devi Mahamaya in their mind, they are always stable.
They never get distracted.
Lakshmi Devi started meditating upon Mahamaya.
After returning to Kailasa, Mahadeva sent a messenger, Chitrarupa, to Vaikuntha.
Chitrarupa conveyed Bhagavan's message to Bhagavan.
There is no life, if your sweetheart is not with you.
Life becomes a suffering.
You know how I suffered after Sati went away.
Look at yourself, were you at peace?
All these thousand years?
Please go to her assuming the form of a horse.
Beget a child, meet the condition that you have put.
And get her back to Vaikuntha.
Bhagavan was also waiting for someone to say this.
He went to Devi, they united and a son was born to them.
His name was Haihaya.
Bhagavan gave that child to a king called Hari Varma who was childless and was observing tapas to beget a child.
This entire sequence of events was to bring into existence Haihaya, the founder of the famous Haihaya vamsha, to which Kartaveeryarjuna belonged.
Very interesting isn't it.
