She was Vedavati.
Vedavati was an avatara of Lakshmi Devi. She was born to do a very special task — to bring an end to Ravana.
There was a sage named Kushadhvaja. Vedavati was his daughter. At the time of her birth itself, Vedavati was chanting Veda mantras. That’s how she got her name. She was kind, wise, and full of devotion. She only wanted to marry Lord Vishnu.
She lived in the forest, wearing simple clothes. She prayed every day and ate only fruits. She wanted Lord Vishnu to notice her and accept her as His wife.
One day, Ravana saw Vedavati. He wanted to marry her, but she said no.
Ravana got angry. He tried to take her away by force. Vedavati became very upset. She said, 'You have done wrong. I will become the reason for your end.'
Then she jumped into fire.
She was then reborn as Sita Devi, the daughter of King Janaka. She was found in a field while the king was ploughing the land to conduct a yajna.
Sita married Sri Rama..
Later, Ravana kidnapped Sita Devi. Sri Rama fought and defeated Ravana.
So, in this way, Vedavati kept her promise. She was the reason Ravana was destroyed.
Vedavati’s story shows us that truth and devotion are stronger than power and pride.
