Pandu was very fond of hunting.

He spent most of his time in the forest only.

Once by mistake, he shot an arrow upon a Rishi who was disguised as a deer.

He was mating at that time.

Rishi cursed him.

If you ever have union with a woman, you will die then and there.

Pandu continued living in the forest contemplating upon dharma and learning from Rishis and Munis.

But continuation of vamsha is very important.

Divinity had planned something else.

When Kunti was still unmarried, Sage Durvasa had given her a boon to Kunti that she can invoke gods by chanting a mantra.

With that mantra, she invoked Dharma, Vayu, and Indra and after uniting with them, Yudhishthira, Bhima, and Arjuna were born to her.

She passed on the same mantra to the second wife of Pandu, that is Madri.

She invoked Ashwini Devas and Nakula and Sahadeva were thus born to her.

In fact, Pandu only convinced Kunti Devi to do this, because as a king continuation of the vamsha was more important than anything else.

So, this is how the five Pandavas were born.

You will find so many of these Divya garbhas or divine pregnancies throughout the scriptures.

This is very interesting, you should see the garbhadhana mantras, the mantras the groom is supposed to chant before he unites with the bride for the very first time.

अहं गर्भमदधामोषधीष्वहं विश्वेषु भुवनेष्वन्तः

The groom says it is me only who is everywhere, I am Parabrahma, Paramatma.

There is nothing too individual about this act.

It is an act ordained by divinity.

It is an act performed by divinity.

That means the divinity is acting out through the body of the groom while impregnating the bride.

He realizes this and chants this mantra.

This is what this mantra means.

Here in Kunti's and Madri’s case, the only difference is that there is no male body involved.

The divinity instead of acting through a male body impregnates them directly.

That is the only difference.

In a normal pregnancy, the divinity acts through a male body.

But, in Kunti's and Madri's case there is no agent in between.

That much only is the difference.

It is direct.

As children, the Pandavas grew up in the forest itself and were educated by the Rishis.

After Pandu passed away, the Rishis took them to Dhritarashtra.

They had entered the ashrama of brahmacharya by then, sporting jata and all.

Rishis told Dhritarashtra: these are your children, your shishyas, they will learn from you, they are your friends, they will act in your interest.

Everyone was excited.

All the citizens were also excited.

They started talking: it is so nice that we have our princes now.

Some said: this is not possible.

King Pandu died long back.

Nobody told us that he had sons.

How can we trust that these are Pandu's sons?

The usual controversies.

But whatever it is, a miracle happened when Pandavas entered the city.

There was pushpavrishti from the sky.

Everyone could hear divine musical instruments playing.

As the Pandavas started living there, the citizens became more and more impressed with them.

Yudhishtira has shaucha in him.

आचारापरिहारश्च संसर्गश्चाप्यनिन्दितैः
आचारे च व्यवस्थानां शौचमित्यभिधीयते

Not to deviate from established code of conduct.

To have full confidence in acharas that they are meant for universal welfare.

To be in the company of only good people.

This quality is called shaucha.

Yudhishtira had his quality.

Bhima had dhriti in him.

What is dhriti?

इष्टानिष्टार्थसंपत्तौ चित्तस्याविकृतिर्धृतिः

He never used to get excited upon seeing what he liked.

He never used to turn his head away from what he disliked.

This is dispassion.

This was Bhima’s quality, dhriti.

Arjuna had vikrama in him.

सर्वातिशयसामर्थ्यं विक्रमं परिचक्षते

Great courage.

Great valor.

Great martial skills.

This was Arjuna's quality.

Nakula and Sahadeva were famous for their humility, dedication towards the needs of the elders, guru shushrusha, tolerance, patience, and control of their senses.

These were the qualities that made the Pandavas popular among people in comparison to the Kauravas, who lacked these qualities.
