കൂർമ്മാവതാരം

ദേവാസുരയുദ്ധങ്ങളിൽ ദേവന്മാർ പലപ്പോഴും പരാജയപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. പലപ്പോഴും സ്വർഗ്ഗം വിട്ട് ഓടിപ്പോകേണ്ടതായും വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. അങ്ങനെ ഒരു സന്ദർഭത്തിൽ ദേവന്മാർ ഒരു ശാശ്വത പരിഹാരത്തിനായി മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനെ സമീപിച്ചു. ഭഗവാൻ പറഞ്ഞു, 'ശുക്രാചാര്യന് സഞ്ജീവനി വിദ്യ അറിയാം. യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മരിച്ചുവീഴുന്ന അസുരന്മാരെ അദ്ദേഹം പുനരുജ്ജീവിപ്പിക്കും. അതാണ് അവരുടെ കരുത്ത്. അവരെ എതിരിടണമെങ്കിൽ നിങ്ങളും അമരത്വം നേടണം. അതിനുള്ള വഴി പറഞ്ഞു തരാം.'

'മന്ദര പർവ്വതത്തിൽ ധാരാളം ഔഷധ സസ്യങ്ങളും ധാതുക്കളും ഉണ്ട്. അവയുടെയൊക്കെ രസം ക്ഷീരസാഗരത്തിൽ അലിയിച്ച് ഒരു ഔഷധക്കൂട്ട് (അമൃത്) ഉണ്ടാക്കിയാൽ അതിന് മരണത്തെ അതിജീവിപ്പിക്കാനാകും.

തേഷാമമൃതവീര്യാണാം രസാനാം പയസൈവ ച അമരത്വം സുരാ ജഗ്മുഃ കാഞ്ചനസ്യ ച നിഃസ്രവാത്

എന്നാൽ ഇത് നിങ്ങളെക്കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം സാധിക്കാവുന്ന കാര്യമല്ല. ദേവന്മാരും അസുരന്മാരും ഒത്തുചേർന്ന് പരിശ്രമിച്ചാലേ ഇത് സാധ്യമാവൂ. അതിനായി പകുതി അമൃത് നിങ്ങൾക്കും തരാം എന്നവർക്ക് വാഗ്‌ദാനം ചെയ്യണം. മേൽക്കൊണ്ടുള്ള കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഞാൻ നോക്കിക്കൊള്ളാം.'

പാലിന് സ്വതവേ ഔഷധഗുണമുണ്ട്. പശുക്കൾ ഭക്ഷിക്കുന്ന പലതരം സസ്യങ്ങളുടെ ഔഷധഗുണം പാലിനുമുണ്ടാകും. ആയുർവേദത്തിലെ പല ഔഷധങ്ങളും പാലും നെയ്യും ആധാരമാക്കിയാണ് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ക്ഷീരസാഗരം തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്.

11000 യോജന ഭൂമിക്ക് മുകളിലും 11000 യോജന ഭൂമിക്കടിയിലുമായാണ് മന്ദര പർവ്വതം നിലകൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്.അതിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന കോടിക്കണക്കിന് ഔഷധച്ചെടികളുടേയും ധാതുക്കളുടേയും സാരമാണ് ഒടുവിൽ ഒരു കുടം അമൃതായി മാറിയത്. മന്ദരപർവ്വതത്തെ കടകോൽ പോലെ കടഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ പരസ്പരം ഞെരിഞ്ഞമർന്ന് സസ്യങ്ങളുടെയും മറ്റും രസം ക്ഷീരസാഗരത്തിൽ ലയിച്ചുചേർന്നു.

ആദിശേഷനാണ് മന്ദര പർവ്വതത്തെ പിഴുതെടുത്ത് കൊണ്ടുവന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ക്ഷീരസാഗര മദ്ധ്യത്തിൽ അതിനെ മുങ്ങിപ്പോകാതെ എങ്ങനെ ഉയർത്തി നിർത്തും? ഉയർന്നു നിന്നാലല്ലേ കടയാൻ സാധിക്കുകയുള്ളൂ? അതിനായി ഭഗവാൻ കൂർമ്മമായി അവതാരമെടുത്തു. തന്‍റെ പുറത്ത് മന്ദര പർവ്വതത്തെ താങ്ങി നിർത്തി. വാസുകിയെ കയറാക്കി അങ്ങനെ ക്ഷീരസാഗരം കടയപ്പെട്ടു.

Kurma Avataram

In the battles between the devas and asuras, the devas were sometimes defeated. They even had to run away from swargam.

At one such time, the devas went to Mahavishnu, seeking a permanent solution. Bhagavan said,
'Shukracharya knows the Sanjeevani Vidya — a secret knowledge that can bring the dead asuras back to life. That is why the asuras are so powerful.
If you want to defeat them, you too must gain immortality. I will tell you how.'

'On Mount Mandara, there are countless medicinal herbs and minerals. If their essence is mixed into the ksheera sagara, it will create a powerful medicine called Amrita by drinking which you can become immortal. The essence of all medicinal herbs and minerals must be dissolved into the ocean. Then you churn it. From that churning, Amrita will come out like how butter comes out when curd is churned.  Drinking it will make you immortal.'

But Bhagavan also told them,
'This cannot be done by you alone. You must join hands with the asuras to churn the ocean. Promise them that they will also get half of the Amrita. I will take care of the rest.'

Why did Bhagavan choose the ocean of milk? Because milk naturally has medicinal properties. The healing power of herbs and grass eaten by cows is present in their milk.  In Ayurveda, many medicines are prepared using milk and ghee as bases. That is why the ocean of milk was chosen.

Mount Mandara was huge — it rose 11000 yojanas above the ground and extended 11000 yojanas below.
When they used it to churn the ocean, the juice from the countless medicinal plants and minerals mixed into the ocean.
Finally, all that essence turned into a pot of Amrita.

Adishesha brought Mandara to Ksheera Sagara.

Now, when they used Mount Mandara to churn, there was a problem. How would the mountain stay steady without sinking into the ocean?
For churning to happen, it had to stay upright like a churning stick.

So Bhagavan took the form of Kurma, the giant tortoise.
He held Mount Mandara firmly on his back in the middle of the ocean.

Then Vasuki, the great serpent, was used as the churning rope, and the devas and asuras together began the mighty churning of the ocean.

ದೇವರುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅಸುರರ ನಡುವಿನ ಯುದ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಸೋಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.ಆಗ ಅವರು ಸ್ವರ್ಗದಿಂದ ಓಡಿಹೋಗಬೇಕಾಗುತಿತ್ತು.

ಅಂತಹ ಒಂದು ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಪರಿಹಾರವನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಮಹಾವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಹೋದರು. ಭಗವಂತನು ಹೇಳಿದನು -

'ಶುಕ್ರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಸಂಜೀವಿನಿ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದಾರೆ - ಸತ್ತ ಅಸುರರನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಜೀವಂತಗೊಳಿಸುವ ರಹಸ್ಯ ಜ್ಞಾನ. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೇ ಅಸುರರು ತುಂಬಾ ಶಕ್ತಿಶಾಲಿಗಳು.

ನೀವು ಅವರನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಲು ಬಯಸಿದರೆ, ನೀವು ಸಹ ಅಮರತ್ವವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಬೇಕು. ನಾನು ನಿಮಗೆ ಹೇಗೆಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

'ಮಂದರ ಪರ್ವತದ ಮೇಲೆ, ಲೆಕ್ಕವಿಲ್ಲದಷ್ಟು ಔಷಧೀಯ ಗಿಡಮೂಲಿಕೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಖನಿಜಗಳಿವೆ. ಅವುಗಳ ಸಾರವನ್ನು ಕ್ಷೀರ ಸಾಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆರೆಸಿದರೆ, ಅದು ಅಮೃತ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಬಲ ಔಷಧವನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಅದನ್ನು ಕುಡಿದರೆ ನೀವು ಅಮರರಾಗಬಹುದು. 

ಸರ್ವೌಷಧೀಃ ಸಮಾವಾಪ್ಯ ಸರ್ವರತ್ನಾನಿ ಚೈವ ಹ ಮಂದಧ್ವಮುದಧಿಂ ದೇವಾ ವೇತ್ಸ್ಯಧ್ವಮಮೃತಂ ತತಃ

ತೇಷಾಮಮೃತವೀರ್ಯಾಣಾಂ ರಸಾನಾಂ ಪಯಸೈವ ಚ ಅಮರತ್ವಂ ಸುರಾ ಜಗ್ಮುಃ ಕಾಂಚನಸ್ಯ ಚ ನಿಃಸ್ರವಾತ್

ಆದರೆ,

ಈ ಕೆಲಸ ಕೇವಲ ನಿಮ್ಮಿಂದ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ನೀವು ಅಸುರರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿ ಸಾಗರ ಮಂಥನ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು. ಅಮೃತದ ಅರ್ಧದಷ್ಟು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡಿ. ಉಳಿದದ್ದನ್ನು ನಾನು ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು.

ಭಗವಂತನು ಕ್ಷೀರ ಸಾಗರವನ್ನು ಏಕೆ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ? ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಹಾಲು ನೈಸರ್ಗಿಕವಾಗಿ ಔಷಧೀಯ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಹಸುಗಳು ತಿನ್ನುವ ಗಿಡಮೂಲಿಕೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಹುಲ್ಲಿನ ಗುಣಪಡಿಸುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಅವುಗಳ ಹಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಆಯುರ್ವೇದದಲ್ಲಿ, ಹಾಲು ಮತ್ತು ತುಪ್ಪವನ್ನು ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಅನೇಕ ಔಷಧಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೇ ಕ್ಷೀರ ಸಾಗರವನ್ನು ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು.

ಮಂದರ ಪರ್ವತವು ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿತ್ತು - ಅದು ನೆಲದಿಂದ 11000 ಯೋಜನೆಗಳಷ್ಟು ಎತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಹಬ್ಬಿತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು 11000 ಯೋಜನೆಗಳಷ್ಟು ಕೆಳಗೆ ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಿತ್ತು.

ಅವರು ಸಾಗರ ಮಂಥನ ಮಾಡಲು ಅದನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿದಾಗ, ಅಸಂಖ್ಯಾತ ಔಷಧೀಯ ಸಸ್ಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಖನಿಜಗಳ ರಸವು ಸಾಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆರೆತುಹೋಯಿತು.

ಕೊನೆಗೆ, ಆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಾರವು ಅಮೃತದ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾಯಿತು.

ಆದಿಶೇಷನು ಕ್ಷೀರ ಸಾಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಮಂದರವನ್ನು ತಂದನು.

ಈಗ, ಅವರು ಮಂದರ ಪರ್ವತವನ್ನು ಮಂಥನ ಮಾಡಲು ಬಳಸಿದಾಗ, ಒಂದು ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಸಾಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗದೆ ಪರ್ವತವು ಹೇಗೆ ಸ್ಥಿರವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ?

ಮಂಥನ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕಾದರೆ, ಅದು ಮಂಥನ ಕೋಲಿನಂತೆ ನೇರವಾಗಿರಬೇಕಿತ್ತು.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಭಗವಂತನು  ಕೂರ್ಮ, ದೈತ್ಯ ಆಮೆಯ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡ.

ಮಹಾವಿಷ್ಣು  ಮಂದರ ಪರ್ವತವನ್ನು ಸಮುದ್ರದ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಬೆನ್ನಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ದೃಢವಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದ.

ನಂತರ ವಾಸುಕಿ, ಮಹಾ ಸರ್ಪವನ್ನು ಮಂಥನ ಹಗ್ಗವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಯಿತು, ಮತ್ತು ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು  ಅಸುರರು ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಸಾಗರದ ಮಹಾ ಮಂಥನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು.
