Lakshmi Devi Is Key To Knowing Sri Hari

This divine couple itself is called parabrahma. Apparently, they look like two different personas. But their likes are identical, their dislikes are identical, their thoughts are identical.

Just like both father and mother have the same concern about their child’s welfare, they both are equally concerned about the ultimate welfare of their children, their devotees. Primarily, Sri Hari manifests as all the manly qualities and Mata manifests as all the womanly qualities. In essence, they both are the same.

Like the father, Sri Hari is a bit more stricter, and mother is soft, gentle and the mediator between her children and the father. She is the queen and he is her lord. There is a mutual surrender between the two, but it is not mandatory, it is voluntary.

To understand Goddess Lakshmi better, we will look into the meaning of the famous Sri Suktam. Someone asked me, why so much about Lakshmi, it is a discourse on Vishnu Sahasra Nama. You can not understand Sri Hari if you don’t understand Lakshmi Devi. They complement each other. They are two different aspects of the same truth. So, if you have not understood Lakshmi, then you have also not understood Sri Hari.

यथा सर्वगतो विष्णुस्तथैवेयं द्विजोत्तम
Just as the entire universe is pervaded by Sri Hari, Mata also pervades the entire universe.

Before getting into Sri Sukta, we should look at couple of other suktas from the Veda. First one is Shraddha Sukta. Here the Goddess is addressed by the name Shraddha. Shraddha also means Goddess Lakshmi only.

श्रद्धया देवो देवत्वमश्नुते - the devatva of deva is attained because of her only.
She is the shakti of Sri Hari. She is the action in Sri Hari. She is the power in Sri Hari. Sri Hari is the lord of the universe because of her.

श्रद्धा प्रतिष्ठा लोकस्य देवी
She is the ashraya of the universe, she is the foundation of the universe. What is this universe, it is not just material world, material world is only a small part of the universe. Even what looks like seemingly dead matter, there is also action within them, we have understood this through a different approach now. What was long ago told in the scriptures, we are reinventing through other methods. Anyway, does not matter as long as it enhances knowledge.

We know today that even the apparent dead matter comprises of only molecules, and molecules comprise of atom and when you go inside an atom you see the constant movement of the electrons around the nucleus. Now they say, even this is not correct, it is only a simplistic visualization. They say the entire atom is only a wave function. It is only constant movement. This is as science understands it now, I don’t know how correct this is.

Anyway, at least action within the apparent dead matter is seen and established. This action is what we call shakti. So even the dead matter, the apparent dead matter is alive, existent because of her, the shakti, the action. That is why it is said she is the ashraya of the universe. The universe exists because of her. Because of this action, the movement, the constant movement that is all over the universe.

Don’t think Lakshmi is only the giver of wealth, she is the Goddess of wealth. Of course, she is Goddess of wealth, but primarily she is reason why the universe even exists. Because she is the action that exists everywhere, all throughout the universe, from atom to atom.

She pervades the universe just as Sri Hari pervades the universe. In fact, they don’t even have separate existences. They are so intertwined, so intermingled with each other we can’t say one from the other. Same concept in Shiva – Shakti also, Ardhanareeswara.

  • If they are one reality, why do we see two forms?
Forms help the mind focus. The two forms express one truth through two lenses: sustainer (Sri Hari) and enabler (Lakshmi Devi). One light, two windows.

  • What exactly does Lakshmi contribute if Sri Hari is all-powerful?
She is shakti — the power, motion, and effectiveness of every divine act. Without power, even a perfect plan stays idle.

  • Is Lakshmi only about money and prosperity?
No. Wealth is a small slice. She is the principle of movement, support, and fruition behind all order in the universe.

  • If both pervade everything, why pray or worship at all?
Prayer aligns your mind with what already pervades you. Alignment reduces friction and makes your action clean and effective.

  • What does mutual surrender between them mean for me?
It shows ideal relationship: authority and compassion serving each other freely. In life, let strength and empathy cooperate, not compete.

  • How do masculine and feminine qualities map to real life?
Initiative, clarity, and law pair with care, nurture, and mediation. A balanced person cultivates both sets, regardless of gender.

  • Why is Shraddha (faithful resolve) linked to Lakshmi?
Because outcomes need steady intention. Shraddha is the inner power that turns knowledge into lived transformation.

  • Is matter really ‘alive’ in this view?
At every scale there is activity and order. Calling that dynamic principle ‘Lakshmi’ reminds us that existence is energized, not inert.

  • How does science talk of motion and waves fit here?
It offers a parallel: reality is dynamic. The tradition names that dynamism as shakti. Different languages, same intuition of movement.

  • If Sri Hari seems stricter and Lakshmi gentler, should I approach only Lakshmi?
Approach both. Gentleness without law is weak; law without compassion is harsh. Together they heal and guide.

  • Is there a hierarchy between them?
No. They are inseparable aspects of one parabrahma. Any apparent rank is for teaching, not for division.

  • Why do scriptures use couple imagery for the absolute?
To show completeness. Union of wisdom and power, purpose and execution, stillness and movement — all in one.

  • What changes in my sadhana with this understanding?
Pair mantra and service, discipline and kindness, study and charity. Seek balance every day, not strength in one corner.

  • How do I relate ethically to wealth under this view?
Treat wealth as entrusted energy. Use it to uphold dharma, support lives, and reduce suffering. Hoarding dulls; circulation purifies.

  • Can I love Sri Hari without revering Lakshmi?
Splitting them splits your own life. Honor both and your devotion becomes whole and steady.

  • What does ‘mediator’ mean in practice?
When you feel unworthy or afraid, Lakshmi trains your heart to receive grace. She softens the ego so wisdom can enter.

  • How does Ardhanareeswara relate here?
It is the same teaching through a different icon: one reality, two complementary halves. Integration, not rivalry.

  • How do I test this in daily life?
Before action, seek clarity (Sri Hari). During action, keep compassion and poise (Lakshmi). After action, offer the results back to the divine.
