Today we will look at the meaning of the divya nama Sharanam.
Sharanam – means refuge, shelter, like a home.
यदुपासात् भयं दुःखं पापं बन्धो न बाधते
प्रतिष्ठा च सुखं ज्ञानं भवेत् इत्यतः शरणम्
If you do the upasana of Sri Hari then fear will not be there in your mind, any kind of fear. Grief will not be there. You will not commit any kind of sin, whatever you may have committed in the past also will go away. There will not be any karma-generating attachments. Then what all will be there with you? Stability, happiness, comforts, knowledge. This is why he is called the ultimate refuge, shelter, Sharanam.
शृणाति दुखं अनेन इति शरणम्
All grief will go if you take refuge in him. Sharanam also means rakshita, the ultimate protector.
If someone is troubling you, what will you do? You will go and complain to the police. They will resolve your grievance, they will protect you. Like that for any kind of fear, danger, threat, grief. Your fear may be that you will lose your job. Your fear may be that your health will suffer. Your fear may be that you will fail in the exam. Danger – all kinds of dangers. You are forced to go on tour to a treacherous mountain area, roads are bad and dangerous. You can take refuge in him, he will protect you. Grief – you have suffered losses, loss of wealth, loss of relatives, loss of reputation. You can go to him, he will make you normal. Grief that you don’t have a child, your children are not well settled in life – for all these you can take shelter in him. You will not be disappointed. Because he is आर्तानां आर्ति हन्ता.
The Lord is saying in Geeta:
मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं निवेशय।
निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः
Your mind, your intelligence, keep them in me, keep them focused on me. Once you do that all doubts will disappear. This is about doing, not thinking about it. If you think, all kinds of doubts will come. You are sitting on the bank of a river thinking whether to get into it or not. All kinds of doubts will come. Is the water too cold? Is it very deep, will I drown? Is there a whirlpool, will I drown? Is there a crocodile, will the crocodile eat me? Are there fish that will bite me? Is there a better river? Is there a safer place where I can take bath? All these doubts will come. Lord says, you have to keep your mind and intelligence focused on me. Don’t think about anything else.
Once you get into the river that the water is not too cold, it is comfortable. It is not very deep, there is no whirlpool, there is no crocodile, there are no piranha to bite you. But unless you get into the water, you will not be able to know. This is what the Lord says: do it, don’t think about it. Then all your doubts will disappear.
Is he the refuge for only those who opt to take refuge in him? No. He is the refuge for everything and everyone, at the time of pralaya at least if not before.
Why does the Lord qualify to be the ultimate refuge? Three reasons. One, his capability – he is capable of anything, everything. If I want to protect you, I should have the required power also. That he has in abundance, he has the power to protect you from anything. Two, his intention should be pure. We have heard about mafia dons who take protection money and protect you. There are those who take money from you and can guard you from authorities. There are so many of those liaison agents. Here, the Lord’s intention is pure. He is not expecting anything from you. Are these two sufficient? Somebody may be strong, has integrity. But why should he be bothered about you? Our Lord here is kind. He can’t bear your grief, worry, trouble. His heart melts. He won’t be able to stop himself helping you.
While Draupadi was being subjected to cruel torture in the Kaurava sabha, there were tears rolling down the cheeks of the Lord. He was elsewhere having food. There were tears rolling down. Devi Rukmini asked him, what is wrong. ‘Why is she not calling out to me, so that I can rush to her rescue.’ This is his quality. Capability to protect, purity of heart, and kindness. These make him the ultimate protector, refuge, Sharanam.
If refuge means safety, how do I make it practical in a busy day?
Use a three-step loop: pause, chant 12 names, act. Before emails, before calls, before sleep. You build a habit of taking shelter first, reacting second.
What changes when I treat every fear as a call to take shelter?
The mind stops bargaining and starts obeying. Do 108 names with slow exhale when fear spikes. You will notice calmer breath, fewer stomach knots, better focus.
How do I know I am actually leaning on Sri Hari and not on my own willpower?
Check after action: if results sting less and gratitude rises, you leaned on him. If ego noise stays loud, shorten it with 27-name cooldowns.
What is the fastest way to cut worry loops at night?
Sit on the bed edge, spine easy, 4-4 breathing paired with sahasranama segments for 5 minutes. Rumination slows, sleep deepens, mornings feel lighter.
How can a family use refuge without turning it into lectures?
Two-minute chorus after dinner: one person leads 12 names softly, others follow. No corrections, no talks. Culture forms by rhythm, not by arguing.
When health news scares me, what should my first response be?
Place the report beside you, chant one full mala of names, then call the doctor. Japa steadies the nervous system so choices are clearer and kinder.
What do I do when guilt tells me I do not deserve shelter?
Hold the memory in your palm, chant 12 names, and state: ‘I accept, I amend, I return to you.’ Then make one concrete amends step. Shelter plus action heals faster.
How does refuge change my work decisions?
Sandwich every big decision: japa, write options, japa. Decide. You act with clarity and less clutching. Credit and blame both land softer.
How do I chant when anger rises suddenly?
Drop your shoulders, half-close eyes, do 27 slow names. Anger feeds on breath and story; names break both in under two minutes.
What is a weekly vow that compounds?
Pick one ‘protector’ cluster from the sahasranama. Recite that set daily for seven days and journal one line on protection you noticed. Attention turns into trust.
How do I stay steady when praised or criticized?
Whisper one name for the other person and one for yourself before you reply. Offer both outcomes to Sri Hari. You remain useful, not reactive.
What if I keep slipping and miss days?
Do a mercy reset: 54 names only for three days. No backlogs. On day four, resume your normal count. Refuge means returning quickly, not perfection.
Can refuge help with habits and cravings?
Yes. Do pre-temptation japa at your trigger hour. 9 minutes of names before the urge time weakens the cue and shortens the spike.
How do I bring shelter into travel or risky situations?
At the door, vehicle, or trail start, place your right hand on the chest and chant 12 names. Repeat at each checkpoint. Fear stays contained; alertness improves.
What is a sign that the names are taking root at home?
Fewer raised voices, quicker apologies, and natural gratitude after meals. If even one shows up this week, keep the practice. The shelter is spreading.
