What to Do with Photos and Idols if They Are Damaged

What to do with photos and small idols of Gods and Goddesses at home if they are damaged.

Now there are two types of photos and idols here — one that you pray to, and one that is just there as a showpiece.

Those which you don’t pray to — you can just put them in water. Nothing much to do. But do this only if they are damaged.

If a photo or an idol has come to you, try not to give it away without reason. Not like — there are too many photos at home, so let me get rid of some. Don’t do that.

Photos and idols that you pray to — if they are damaged — in case of photos, even discolouration or fading of colours should be considered as damage. Basically, there is not too much of technicality about this. If you feel that there is something wrong, then there is something wrong.

So, photos and idols — you have to replace with exactly the same kind. If it is a photo of Lord Krishna with cows, alone — then you should not replace it with the image of Radha Krishna. It should be exactly the same — even the size. If it is an idol, then even the material should be the same.

Then,

Pray to or worship the old photo one last time. Keep the new one near it.

Pray to the divinity that he or she should leave the old photo or idol and occupy the new one. Pray sincerely — it will happen.

Then pray to or worship the new photo or idol also.

Then take the old photo or idol, cover it with a piece of cloth, and put it in water.

Whatever we see around us — they have all originated from water.

'Aapo vaa idam sarvam' — so when you put in water, you are just returning it to the source.

Even if some chaitanya remains in the photo or idol, once you put it in water, it gets dissolved in it. So there is no harm.

But make sure that the water body is clean.

Don’t leave it in such a way that someone else will pick it up and start worshiping. This should not happen.

You should never leave photos or idols below trees or even at temples.

It should always be put in clean water bodies — river or the sea.

Now you can continue to pray to and worship the new photo or idol.
