Sandhyopasana or Sandhya Vandanam is Surya worship, done with Gayatri Mantra.
What is the significance of Gayatri Mantra?
Gayatri Mantra is Surya Mantra.
The term Bharga in Gayatri Mantra means the brilliance of Surya.
This brilliance of Surya Deva, if you meditate upon that,
It will destroy rebirths, give you moksha.
It will destroy three kinds of miseries also — Adhibhautika, Adhyatmika, and Adhidaivika.
These miseries are basically distractions caused by physical reasons, mental reasons, or even divine reasons.
They will not allow you to concentrate in your meditation on truth.
What exactly is truth?
Awareness of the real nature of anything and everything.
You watch a horror movie — it is scary. Fear grips.
But if you don’t get lost in the story always, maintain that you are sitting in a movie hall,
It is just combinations of light and sound playing tricks on your mind — then you don’t get scared.
You will look around, see expressions on the faces of those sitting around, and you will start feeling how funny this is.
See how everyone is mesmerized with this play of light and sound, how they think that it is for real.
This is the awareness of truth.
The truth that it is just light and sound — the real nature of what is happening in front.
This is real knowledge.
Once you develop this kind of awareness, then you are not attached anymore, not bound anymore.
This is the kind of awareness that Krishna gave to Arjuna.
Why do you think that you are going to do it?
I have already done everything. I have shot the movie. The shooting is over.
The incidents have already taken place — meaning I have decided what all should happen.
And what I decide are as good as they have happened.
I am just playing the movie for you — in which you are also one of the characters.
Why are you getting emotional about it?
This kind of knowledge comes not by learning — it comes by unlearning.
When ajnana or false knowledge in your mind goes away.
What is this false knowledge?
That there is a real haunted house in front of you, and those are real ghosts in front of you — they can attack and kill you also.
This is the reason you are scared.
Then someone tells you, you realize, you are convinced — that it is just a movie hall, movie, light and sound.
Then your false knowledge goes, your fear goes.
Your mind becomes free.
This is liberation, mukti, moksha.
It is not rocket science.
Liberation is simple, straightforward.
Your mind is a haunted house.
You think that a house is haunted.
It is kept locked since ages.
No light.
You think that there are families of bloodthirsty ghosts living there, waiting to tear you apart if you go in.
Even the thought of this haunted house gives you that creepy feeling in the stomach.
Then you get power supply in that house.
Light up all the rooms.
Lights are on even at night.
You clean up the place.
Then you realize that there is nothing in there — no ghosts, nothing — as good as any other house.
Light came in, darkness gone, fear gone.
You are released from fear.
You are liberated.
How do you get something into your mind?
By looking at it or thinking about it.
Which is the brightest source of light?
Surya, his light, his brilliance.
Think about it, meditate upon that.
That will fill your mind with light.
Remove darkness from all corners of your mind.
It will become bright, brilliant, and lively.
This is Sandhyopasana, Sandhya Vandanam.
