What Is the Meaning of Vayu?

When we say Vayu, we immediately think of air — a mixture of oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and other gases.

In our scriptures, Vayu has a much broader sense. Whatever moves or causes movement is called Vayu.

Inside our body also, there are Vayus — prana, apana, vyana, udana, and samana. These are the main Vayus causing all the different movements inside the body. They are also called pranas. There are five upa-pranas also.

What we are going to discuss now is about Vayus that are cosmic.

The first kind of Vayu is called Pravaha — which extends from the surface of the earth up to the megha mandala, the plane of the clouds. Pravaha is responsible for moving around the clouds in the sky. Pravaha only carries water vapour from the surface of the earth to megha mandala and causes the formation of clouds.

The second kind of Vayu is called Aavaha — Aavaha is responsible for the movement of the Sun. This is pivoted to Dhruva or pole star.

The third Vayu is called Udvaha — This is connected to Chandra mandala and pivoted to Dhruva. Udvaha is responsible for the movement of the Moon.

The fourth Vayu is called Samvaha — This is connected to nakshatra mandala and is responsible for stellar movements.

The fifth kind of Vayu is Vivaha — responsible for all planetary movements. All the planets move in the sky because of and as controlled by Vivaha.

The sixth Vayu is Parivaha — The Saptarshi mandala is connected to Dhruva through this Vayu, and Parivaha is responsible for the movement of Saptarshi mandala.

The seventh is Paravaha — The other six mandalas are not independent of each other. Their movements are synchronized with each other, and this is achieved through Paravaha.

Isn’t it really surprising how our sages have found out all these and have documented all these?

What we call as gravitational force or magnetic force — they all come under the purview of the term Vayu. Anything that can cause movement is Vayu.
