Adhik Maas is also known as Mal Maas or Purushottam Maas. It is a special system in the Vedic calendar designed to maintain the balance of time.
The Hindu calendar follows the movement of the Moon.
But there is a gap of about 11 days between the solar year (based on the Sun) and the lunar year (based on the Moon).
This gap keeps increasing every year.
In about 3 years, it becomes roughly 29–30 days.
To balance this difference, an extra month is added.
That is called Adhik Maas.
When does Adhik Maas occur?
When there is no solar transit (no change of zodiac sign by the Sun) during a lunar month, that month becomes Adhik Maas.
This happens once every 2.5 to 3 years.
What is the significance of Adhik Maas?
This month is not treated like regular months.
It is specifically meant for sadhana, devotion, and inner purification.
During this time:
The results of japa, tapa, charity, and vrat increase significantly
Worship of Vishnu becomes especially powerful
Reading texts like Bhagavata Purana, Bhagavad Gita, and Ramayana is considered highly auspicious
That is why it is also called Purushottam Maas — a month dedicated to Bhagavan Vishnu.
What should be avoided during this month?
Traditionally, people avoid:
Marriage
Housewarming ceremonies
Starting major new ventures
This is not because these are bad.
It is because this month is not meant for outer expansion, but for inner refinement.
What should be done during this month?
Keep it simple and direct:
Do daily mantra japa
Give charity, especially food
Observe some form of restraint or vrat
Study dharmic texts
Even small efforts during this time create a deep impact.
Straight understanding
Adhik Maas reminds you of something important:
Life is not only about constant movement.
At times, you must pause.
You must correct yourself.
You must look within.
This month gives you that opportunity.
A word from Vedadhara
At Vedadhara, we present such traditions not through fear or blind belief, but with clarity.
So that you act at the right time, with the right understanding.
If this helped you, share it with someone who wants to understand dharma, not just follow it.
Question 1: Do japa and charity really give more results during Adhik Maas?
Answer: Yes. This period is specifically set aside for spiritual focus. The mind naturally turns inward. That makes practices like japa, charity, and study more effective and deeper in impact.
Question 2: If someone gets married or starts something new in this month, will it cause harm?
Answer: It is not about harm. It is about alignment. This time is reserved for inner work. If you engage in big external activities, your focus gets divided. That is why tradition advises strengthening the inner foundation first.
Question 3: What is the simplest and most useful practice during this month?
Answer: Keep it practical. Do a little daily japa. Offer food in charity. Spend 10–15 minutes reading dharmic texts. Observe your behavior and correct small habits. That is the true use of Adhik Maas.
Objection: This is just an old tradition. What relevance does it have today?
Answer: This is not just a tradition. It is a system. Even today, people take breaks, step back from routine, and reset themselves. Adhik Maas does the same at a spiritual level. It gives direction and purpose to that pause.
