Do you know what happens after someone dies?
Of course, the body is cremated.
The body is not there anymore.
It is not just the body.
There is a soul inside the body.
The body is just like a vehicle in which the soul travels.
You put candy in your mouth.
Is it your tongue that is enjoying the taste?
No.
It is the soul through the tongue that is enjoying the taste.
Say someone hurts his leg.
Is it the leg that is suffering the pain?
No, it is the soul.
There is an electric cable which is lying open.
Someone touches it and gets a shock.
It is not the cable that got the shock, it is the person who touched it.
Body and soul are also like that.
The body is just like that cable that transferred electricity to the person who touched it.
It is the soul that keeps the body alive.
If the soul leaves the body, it is dead.
Then it is cremated.
How do you know that the body is dead?
It will not move, there will be no breathing, and it will become cold.
So what happens to the soul after it comes out of the body?
Is it visible?
No, you can’t see it.
It is just like the wind, you won’t be able to see it.
Have you heard about Yamaraja?
He is the God who takes people’s lives.
It is his responsibility.
He is responsible for separating the soul from the body when the time to die comes.
He has got soldiers who come to do this.
Yamaraja has got another big responsibility.
Yamaraja has got an accountant.
His name is Chitragupta.
He keeps on writing in a book about what every person does on earth from the time he is born till the time he dies.
Both good deeds and bad deeds.
When his soldiers bring the soul in front of Yamaraja, he calls for the book.
He then checks what the person has done on earth.
He rewards them for the good deeds they have done.
He sends good people to Swarga and other such beautiful places to enjoy for so many years.
He sends bad people to Naraka where they have to suffer a lot.
They will be put into a fire, they will be put into a pit full of snakes and insects.
The punishment depends on what they did on earth.
Suppose a person destroys a forest for selfish reasons.
He will have to live in a forest in which the trees and plants have got leaves which are swords.
This Naraka is called Asipatravana.
Asi means sword, patra means leaf.
If he moves, then the swords will cut and hurt him.
He will have to live there for hundreds or thousands of years.
Yamaraja decides the rewards and punishments.
That’s why everyone should stay away from doing bad things.
If they don’t get caught and get punished here, they will still get punished by Yamaraja.
But he is very kind and pleasing to good people.
He instructs his soldiers: Bring good people with a lot of respect and comfort.
Bring them in a chariot.
But bad people, meaning souls of bad people, tie a rope around their necks, drag them to me.
Those who live a good life, being honest, being kind and helpful to others, taking care of nature, taking care of plants and animals, respecting parents, teachers and elders, obeying laws; then Yamaraja will welcome them with a smiling face and give them rewards.
