I have no interest in spirituality.

I know it is good.

But I can’t make myself to do puja or listen to katha.

I get sleepy.

My mind doesn’t remain focused.

My husband doesn’t believe in all these.

He says: God is inside you.

For him, work is worship.

Children, you know these days; Facebook, WhatsApp.

They are hooked on to the mobile phone.

Is there a solution?

Is there a way forward in such cases?

Two things we have to see here.

First, you are getting exposure to spirituality, you are getting opportunity to listen to the glory of the Lord itself because of the punya that you have acquired over crores of births.

But then, side by side this disinterest is also there.

This obstacle is also there.

That is because of the vasana that you have brought into the present birth from the past births.

It is like a balance sheet with two sides

A bank passbook, with both the credit side and the debit side.

If a vehicle is moving at high speed, even if you apply brakes, it won’t stop instantly.

This is because of its inertia.

This disinterest is also a kind of inertia because of your vasana from previous births, which was built into you at the time of your birth.

What to do then?

There are many ways to get over this.

An infant likes only the mother’s milk.

The first time, or even for the next few months or even years, the infant spits out any solid food, baby food that the mother tries to give.

Which child would take baby food with interest, relish solid food, even rice?

But then the mother doesn’t stop.

She will keep on feeding.

The child may cough, vomit, cry at the top of its voice.

The mother will not stop.

After some time, the child will develop taste for rice, chappati, whatever.

But what if the mother gives up after the first attempt or first few attempts?

In the same way, keep listening, keep on listening.

Even if it is boring, keep on listening.

After some time you will develop taste, interest.

The second method, be in the company of good devout people

Who are good people for a seeker?

Any group where the topic of discussion is always devotion, God, spirituality.

Be with such people.

Even individuals, spend time with them.

Not movies, not politics, not stock market and economy.
You know how it helps.

There is something about good people that radiates from them which will influence you.

This is like someone chews on a piece of tamarind.

Looking at his expression your mouth also starts watering

Someone is crying in grief, the grief gets transmitted to you.

You see a child laughing, naturally, that will bring pleasantness in your mind as well.

This is natural.

In the same way, company of good devout people, pious people will transform you.

Interact with them more and more.

It is not even what they tell you.

Their mere presence can transform you.

Visit holy places, sacred places, temples.

These places have got inherent power to transform you.

शुश्रूषोः श्रद्दधानस्य वासुदेवकथारुचिः।
स्यान्मत्सेवया विप्राः पुण्यतीर्थनिषेवणात्॥

Not only that, you also get opportunity to meet good pious people there.

Participate in religious gatherings, bhajan, kirtan, satsang.

They can all transform you, bring bhakti into you.

Listen to bhajan, kirtan, discourse on YouTube, tv.

Watch serials like Ramayana, Mahabharata.

All these are beneficial.

As you keep on doing these, the lethargy, disinterest, and inertia will leave your mind.

Interest will develop.

शृण्वतां स्वक्थाः कृष्णः पुण्यश्रवणकीर्तनः।
हृद्यन्तःस्थो ह्यभद्राणि विधुनोऽति सुहृत्सताम्॥

It is like cultivating a piece of wasteland.

First, you clear all the weeds, remove unwanted weeds with the tool called satsang, company of good people.

Then you plough and level it with good charitable acts of your own.

Then you sow the seeds of bhakti there.

Water them with Bhagavat-katha.

So, don’t think that Bhagavata is only for those who have an interest in spirituality.

It is a good way to develop interest, even if you don’t have it right now.
