What is bhakti?

Bhakti is an exclusive spiritual love for Bhagavan. This is the path of devotion and self-surrender. Devotees surrender themselves to Bhagavan, and Bhagavan removes all their suffering. Devotees direct their activities towards Bhagavan as selfless service, to please Bhagavan. The path of bhakti leads to knowledge and self-realization. Sadness, ignorance, and fear are removed by bhakti.

According to Srimad Bhagavatam, what is bhakti-yoga?

Srimad Bhagavatam, 3.29.12-14 states that bhakti is devotional service rendered to Bhagawan with utmost love. Bhaktas have no wants or desires other than serving Bhagawan's lotus feet. A bhakta, even if offered the five forms of liberation- salokya, sameepya, saroopya, sarshti, and sayujya would prefer serving the lotus feet over any of them. Bhagavatam describes this as the highest spiritual pursuit in life, called bhakti-yoga.

Whom did Suta learn Bhagavata from?

Suta learned Bhagavata from Shukadeva, the son of Sage Vyasa

Why is bhakti the simplest spiritual path?

Bhakti marga is very easy on the mind. You simply have to listen to the greatness of Bhagavan. In Jnana-marga, there are a number of apparently contradictory systems. You will get confused. In Karma-kanda perfection is very important. Achieving perfection is very stressful.

In Naimisharanya, at the end of their thousand-year-long yajna, Shunaka Maharshi asked Suta to tell them the essence of all shastras.

By then they had heard all the Puranas from Suta.

Shaunaka Maharshi tells Suta that he presumes and believes that essence of shastras means it must be the stories of the leelas of Lord Krishna.

Remembering the Lord's name–the name Krishna–once or his form once can burn sins committed over hundreds of births.

Why should the sins be burned?

Because these sins are behind all your present troubles.

Unless these sins are burned away, either by suffering or by the power of the
Lord’s name and form, you can never get out of your troubles.

They will keep on coming back to you in one form or the other.

Taking the Lord’s name once will burn away all the past sins like how fire destroys a haystack.

So much power is there in a single name or remembering his form once, then how much power will be there in the stories of his leelas?

Gangaji has got so much purificatory power just because one thumb of the feet of the Lord has touched her.

Then how much power will his stories will have?

The Lord has got two aspects, nirguna, and saguna.

Nirguna is formless.

Saguna is with a form like how we see him, in peetambara, shyama varna, with the flute.

Grasping his nirguna aspect is very difficult.

Grasping his saguna aspect is very simple, only bhakti is needed for this.

Nothing else.

The stories of the leelas of the Lord are about his saguna aspect only.

They are not about the nirguna aspect.

That’s why this method is so simple.

This is the greatness of this method.

You only have to listen to them, appreciate them, and share them with others.

This is the only thing you have to do.

This is the greatest of all sadhanas.

The path of jnana is complicated.

There are so many schools of thought.

Hundreds of thousands of books.

Many of them contradict each other apparently.

You will get caught in between, lost in between.

But bhakti marga is simple, you only need to have faith.

The lofty principles of the Vedas, Geeta, everybody may not be able to understand.

But bhakti is open for all.

Even if you are in pursuit of knowledge, even if you are a jnani, you can switch to bhakti marga.

They do it.

Many scholars do this.

It is so much easier on the mind, on the brain and so much more effective.

Anybody can take his names.

You don’t need any special skills for that.

Anybody can listen to his stories, they are narrated in simple language.

Anybody can sing his keertans, bhajans.

Don’t follow raga, don’t follow tala, you don’t need to learn classical music to sing his glory.

Make mistakes, nobody is going to question you.

Your voice may be awful, nobody will make fun of you.

Keep on doing this, all your doubts will go away.

भिद्यते हृदयग्रन्थिश्छिद्यन्ते सर्व संशयाः।

There will be no more questions in your mind.

Jnana marga, every day there will be a new question.

A new doubt.

I am not saying it doesn’t work.

But it takes a lot of effort and a lot of time.

You can take that route, no problem if you have the ability to sustain, perseverance, and mental capability.

But bhakti is the simplest method.

The fastest method.

Sage Shaunaka is telling Suta: you might say that isn't this what you have been listening to?

Every scripture speaks about the greatness of the Lord only.

This is what everyone has been listening to since ages.

Aren't you satisfied?

Drink a glass of mango juice, something as silly as mango juice, next day you want to drink it again.

You are not satisfied by drinking once.

And stories of the Lord’s leelas are nectar.

How can anyone be satisfied by drinking that nectar?

Listen hundred times, thousand times, again and again, you will not be satisfied.

Because it is nectar.

This is not a statement.

This is an experience.

You ask anyone who has listened to the Lord’s stories.

They will tell you this.

These stories are filled with sweetness.

Sweetness that you will keep on longing for, to have again and again.

Shaunaka Maharshi is telling Suta: then you might ask, what are you people doing then, sitting here, in this forest?

If Kaliyuga is so bad, then you should be going around and educating people.

What are you doing sitting here?

We still don’t have the right tool, the right method.

This is what we are asking you for.

Clarifying dharma-adharma, giving sermons on dharma and adharma will not work in Kaliyuga.

The thinking of the people of Kaliyuga will be-

Who has seen God?

How can you believe in something which is not even visible?

What dharma?

Who has seen the result of being dharmic?

What is the guarantee that all these things work?

Let me enjoy when the opportunity is there.

Take advantage of the opportunity and enjoy life.

Get the maximum out of life.

There is only one life.

This may be the only life.

Who knows?

Why give up what has come to you?

Enjoy.

Life is to enjoy.

This is how people of Kaliyuga would think.

We still don’t have the right tool with which we can save them.

This is what we are asking you for in the form of essence of shastras.
