Japa, the mental or verbal repetition of a mantra, is a powerful practice that purifies and transforms the practitioner’s physical, vital, and mental bodies. The process of japa is not merely a mechanical repetition of words; it is a deeply spiritual exercise that elevates the practitioner’s inner purity and consciousness, freeing them from impurities and aligning their energies toward spiritual growth.
The practitioner’s physical body, or annamaya kosha, is the outermost sheath of existence. It is through this body that we experience the material world. However, physical existence alone is incomplete. The vital body, known as the pranamaya kosha, governs our life energy or prana, which is responsible for breath and vitality. Beyond this is the manomaya kosha, the mental body, which encompasses our thoughts, emotions, and intellect.
Japa works by purifying all three of these sheaths simultaneously. Through the repetition of a sacred mantra, the practitioner’s energy begins to shift from a tamasic (dark and downward) flow to a sattvic (pure and upward) stream. Tamas, characterized by inertia and ignorance, represents the downward pull of worldly desires and attachments. When japa is practiced regularly with focus and devotion, it transforms this tamasic energy into a sattvic energy stream, which is full of light, purity, and spiritual awareness.
The challenge in this purification process lies in uniting the physical, vital, and mental bodies, which are often misaligned and scattered. The physical body may be engaged in worldly activities, the mind may be distracted, and the vital energy may be wasted on trivial pursuits. Japa aligns these bodies, making them active, focused, and receptive to spiritual energy.
The ultimate goal of japa is to purify the body, the mind and intellect, so that they become free from limitations and defects. The mind becomes clear and calm, the intellect sharp and focused, and the vital energy is channeled toward spiritual growth. Through this purification, the practitioner’s energy is transformed from a mixed and scattered flow to a concentrated and focused stream of pure spiritual energy.
Arjuna was an incarnation of Indra through the womb of Kunti. His incarnation along with those of other Devas was to put the power of evil under check which was flourishing at that time in the form of wicked and cruel rulers.
