The Prince Who Chose the Forest

0:00 0:00

Imagine this: You are a Prince. Everyone loves you, and tomorrow, you are supposed to become the King! But suddenly, your father calls you into his room with tears in his eyes. He tells you that because of a very old promise, you can’t be King. Instead, you have to leave your home and live in the forest for 14 years.

What would you do? Would you get angry? Would you cry?

This is exactly what happened to Prince Rama in the famous story of the Ramayana.

King Dasharath is heartbroken. He loves Rama so much that he can’t stand the idea of him leaving.

The King was so desperate that he actually told Rama:  'Rama, don't listen to me! I am under a spell of sadness. Just put me in jail, take over the kingdom, and stay here with me. I would rather be your prisoner than have you leave!'

Can you imagine? A King asking his own son to lock him up just so they could stay together!

But Rama was no ordinary prince. He looked at his father and smiled gently. He knew that if he stayed, people would say King Dasharath was a liar who broke his promises.

Rama said:  'Father, I don't want to be King if it means you have to break your word. I want the whole world to remember you as the King who always told the truth, even when it was the hardest thing to do.'

Rama chose to go to the forest - not because he was being punished, but because he wanted to protect his father's honor. He wanted his father to be a hero of Truth.

You should  see the moment Rama says his final goodbye. It’s a very emotional scene!

The King: He is so sad that he has fainted on his couch.

The Queens and Ministers: Everyone is crying because they love Rama so much.

Prince Rama: Even though everyone around him is upset, Rama stays calm. He knows he is doing the right thing.

 What Can We Learn?

This story teaches us two very big lessons:

  1. The Power of Your Word: Keeping a promise is one of the most important things a person can do.
  2. True Bravery: Being brave isn’t just about fighting monsters; sometimes, it’s about doing the right thing even when it makes you sad.

What would you do if you were Rama? Would you choose the Kingdom or the Truth?
