Nava Durga: Nine Forms Of Durga

The nine forms of Goddess Durga worshipped during Navaratri, called the Nava Durgas, are very important. Each form has a specific dhyana shloka.

  1. Shailaputri
    Shailaputri is Parvati. Devi is seated on a bull. She holds a spear in her hand. A crescent moon adorns her forehead. May shei fulfill all desires.
  2. Brahmacharini
    In this form, Devi holds a kamandalu and a rosary in her hands. May Devi bless me.
  3. Chandraghanta
    The third form of the Devi is Chandraghanta. Riding a lion, Devi holds fierce and deadly weapons in her hands. May Devi bless me.
  4. Kushmanda
    The fourth form is Kushmanda. Devi holds two vessels, one filled with wine and the other with blood. This is a very fierce form. May Devi bless me.
  5. Skandamata
    Skandamata is the fifth form. Devi is seated on a throne, holding lotuses in her two hands. May Devi bring auspiciousness to me.
  6. Katyayani
    Devi Katyayani is the destroyer of Danavas. Holding a bright sword called Chandrahasa and seated on a big tiger, may that Devi bless me.
  7. Kalaratri
    Special features of this Devi: singly braided hair, large ears adorned with hibiscus flowers, black naked  body anointed with oil, long lips, seated on a donkey, and wearing thorny iron ornaments on her left leg. May this fierce form of Devi bless me.
  8. Mahagauri
    Seated on a white bull and dressed in white garments, may Mahagauri, who brings joy to Mahadeva, bless me.
  9. Siddhidatri
    Worshipped by gods, siddhas, gandharvas, yakshas, and asuras, Siddhidatri grants all siddhis. May Devi bless me.

From the first day of Navaratri, these nine forms of the Devi are worshipped in sequence each day.
