The Etymology of Brahma's Sons' Names

  • Narada: When Brahma Ji resumed the task of creation a sage emerged from his throat (नरद) Hence, he became known as 'Narada'.
  • Pracheta: The son who manifested from Brahma Ji’s mind (चित्त) was named 'Pracheta'.
  • Daksha: The one who suddenly emerged from Brahma Ji’s right side and was proficient (दक्ष) in all actions was called 'Daksha'.
  • Kardama: In the Vedas, the word 'Kardama' (कर्दम) means 'shadow'. The child who was born from Brahma Ji’s shadow was named 'Kardama'.
  • Marichi: The word 'Marichi' (मरीचि) in the Vedas signifies a type of radiance. Hence, the child who appeared with extraordinary brilliance was called 'Marichi'.
  • Kratu: The child who, in a previous birth, had performed numerous yajnas (क्रतु) was born as Brahma Ji’s son and was named 'Kratu' after those sacrifices.
