Sri Hari Removes Sin Effortlessly Because That Is in His Very Nature
आलोड्य सर्वशास्त्राणि विचार्य च पुनः पुनः
इदमेकं सुनिष्पन्नं ध्येयो नारायणः सदा
You churn curd to take out butter, or churn milk to take out the cream — the essence. If you churn all shastras and see what their essence is, what comes out is only one advice — meditate upon Narayana always, remember him always.
हरिरेकः सदा ध्येयो भवद्भिः सत्त्वसंस्थितैः
ॐ इत्येवं सदा विप्राः पठत ध्यात केशवम्
Only Sri Hari should be meditated upon, always. Keep chanting omkara and keep meditating upon him, says Harivamsha.
यन्नामकीर्तनं भक्त्या विलापनमनुत्तमम्
मैत्रेयाशेषपापानां धातूनामिव पावकः
Just as fire purifies metals like gold and silver, namasankeertanam purifies and removes all impurities.
अवशेनाऽपि यन्नाम्नि कीर्तिते सर्वपातकैः
पुमान् विमुच्यते सद्यः सिंहत्रस्तैर्वृकैरिव
You may be taking his name under compulsion or in helplessness, without genuine devotion or intent. But still, just as at the roar of a lion the other animals such as wolves in the jungle run away in fear, your sins will also run away from you.
हरिर्हरति पापानि दुष्टचित्तैरपि स्मृतः
अनिच्छयाऽपि संस्पृष्टो दहत्येव हि पावकः
You touch fire, you get burned — whether you want to get burned or not does not matter. Burning is the nature of fire. Purifying is in the nature of Bhagawan. You take his name, he will purify you. Whether you know it or not does not matter. Whether you wanted it or not does not matter. That is his nature.
This is the reason why it is a common practice to keep names of gods and goddesses while naming children. You at least take his or her name ten times a day when you call out to your son or daughter. You get purified in the course of your day-to-day life — without any extra effort.
ज्ञानतोऽज्ञानतो वाऽपि वासुदेवस्य कीर्तनात्
तत्सर्वं विलयं याति तोयस्थं लवणं यथा
You have a fistful of salt in your hand. Put it into water — it disappears after some time. Like that, you praise Vasudeva intentionally or unintentionally — all your sins disappear.
यस्मिन् न्यस्तमतिर्न याति नरकं स्वर्गोऽपि यच्चिन्तने
विघ्नो यत्र निवेशितात्ममनसो ब्राह्मोऽपि लोकोल्पकः
If your mind is engrossed in Sri Hari, hell is ruled out for you. But then, heaven is also a distraction for you. You don’t want to go to heaven either. You want only his sameepya — closeness, proximity. Even if you are offered Brahmaloka, you don’t want it. You just want to be with him.
Sri Venkatesha Suprabhata says:
त्वद्गोपुराग्रशिखराणि निरीक्षमाणाः
स्वर्गापवर्गपदवीं परमां श्रयन्तः
मर्त्या मनुष्यभुवने मतिमाश्रयन्ते
श्रीवेङ्कटाचलपते तव सुप्रभातम्
Svargapavarga padaveem paramam shrayantaha martyaaha — those who are travelling through the sky to reach heaven or attain moksha
Tvadgopura shikharani nireekshamanaha — once they see the top of your gopura
Manushya bhuvane matimashrayante — they change their mind and come back to this world to serve at your lotus feet.
