Someone said recently,
Nowadays, people have started putting their mother’s name along with their own name, instead of the father’s name.
An indication that we are progressing in terms of gender equality.
Why should it always be the father’s name?
But do you know that it was originally the mother’s name — in our own culture?
And somewhere down the line, we started using both, and then, in just the past few decades, only the father’s name — due to the influence of alien cultures and customs.
In many Vedic mantras, you’ll see the usage: amushyayana or amushyaa putraha.
When you have to refer to a person specifically, his identity is given by two factors — his gotra and his mother’s name.
Not the father’s name — the mother’s name.
Not by nakshatra or rasi either.
This is how it is in the Vedas.
What better proof do you need for how important women and motherhood are in the Vedic culture?
Today, for unique identity, we go for biometrics like fingerprint and iris.
But back then, the unique ID used to be gotra and mother’s name — not the father’s name.
Somewhere down the line, we changed this.
We started adding the father’s name to our own names — to the extent that this has become officially mandatory for many things.
You need to have your first name, a surname, and your father’s name as your middle name.
Where this came from — we don’t know.
But in Vedic culture, it was the mother who was important.
Just as the lady of the house is the custodian of the Agni at home — the Agni belongs to her.
The husband has to seek her permission every time he has to offer ahuti in the Agni.
He says hoshyami.
The wife gives consent — juhudhi.
Then only he can offer ahuti.
Otherwise, not.
Not only the Vedas — even the Gita.
The Lord addresses Arjuna as Kaunteya, Partha.
Kunti’s son, Pritha’s son — Pritha is another name for Kunti.
Lord Ganesha — Gauri Nandana, Uma Putra.
Bheeshmacharya is known as Gangeya — Ganga’s son, much less as Shantanu’s son.
Lord Kartikeya — Krithika’s son.
Lord Krishna — Devaki Nandana, just as much as Vasudeva Suta.
India wakes up with — Kausalya Supraja Rama.
Lord Rama is Kausalya’s son.
So let’s not think that we are just now learning culture.
We are not becoming civilized — we always had this with us.
Someone brainwashed us for their own purpose — to suit their agenda.
And now, they are giving it back to us as if we are learning something new.
