We have been seeing the power of sound or power of vibrations.
We have ultrasonic cutters, ultrasonic welding machines — even weapons. Sound can produce heat. Sound can influence subatomic particles and movements. Sound means not just audible sound — all kinds of vibrations.
Mantra shastra doesn’t just deal with audible sound. Obviously — in mantra shastra, sounds are at para, pashyanti, madhyama, and vaikahari states. From para, when you come to vaikahari, it becomes apara — the gross sound that we are able to hear. The spoken-out sound, in case of speech.
When vibrations can influence even subatomic particles and affect their state — make one element change into another, make one state change into another — why wouldn’t mantra be able to manifest divinities?
That is one of the primary purposes of mantras, as we have them today — to manifest divine energy, divine presence.
All the devatas as we have them are shareerees — they have bodies, they have physical existence. When we say that Lord Shiva resides in Kailasa, it actually means that he is there in physical form, as we see him in his images. It is not imagination.
He may not be visible to those who go there. The President of India resides in Delhi — but can everyone who goes to Delhi see the President of India? He will be visible only to those who interact with him — that is his choice. Likewise, Lord Shiva in Kailasa will be visible to those whom he chooses.
Mantras can manifest devatas or bring their presence to where you want —
into an idol,
into water kept in a kalasha,
onto a mandala drawn with colored powders,
into a weapon.
That is what astras are all about.
When you say Agneyastra, you are bringing Agni Deva’s tremendous power to destroy into an ordinary arrow. How do you do that? By chanting a particular mantra.
Pashupatastra means you are bringing the tremendous power of Lord Shiva into an arrow by chanting his mantra.
When you write Namatraya Astra Mantra, you are bringing the healing presence of Lord Vishnu onto your own body and also into the book in which you are writing. You keep that book near a patient — it is like having the healing presence of the Lord near him, always.
Ayurveda has methods to energize medicines by chanting mantras — while preparing, while administering. Every system is unique, you see.
Ayurveda recognizes the power of mantras.
In some of the psychiatric formulations in Ayurveda, Rudra mantra is chanted while preparing the medicine. The vibrations of the mantras get absorbed into the medicine and help the patient. Shiva nirmalayam such as bilva leaves used for performing archana, and water used for abhisheka, are used as ingredients in these medicines.
This is not some kind of show. The patient may not even know that this is being done. But those who created the system called Ayurveda — they knew it helps. That’s why they have put it there.
Today, half the Ayurvedic doctors may not even know about all these.
Why just mantras — we are destroying these systems in the name of standardisation. We are blindly following allopathy, which understands only the properties of molecules.
We are trying to implement SMP in Ayurveda — only standardised, approved medicines should be prescribed. Ayurveda has tens of thousands of combinations.
In fact, that itself is a later concept. Originally, the vaidya would prescribe a customised medicine for each patient. The ingredients would vary from patient to patient.
The vaidya would know which herb has healing power during which season and which one doesn’t.
The vaidya would know which herb should be plucked during the day and which one during the night.
The vaidya would know which medicine has to be prepared afresh every time it is to be taken — otherwise, it won’t work.
Such a rich branch of knowledge — we want to standardise it now.
Only a few medicines, which are approved by the authorities, should be prescribed. You are killing the system.
After one generation, the Ayurvedic doctors will only know the names of these medicines — nothing else. All these concepts will even disappear from the textbooks. Such an easy way to kill a system.
This is what we are doing today.
There is a guitar, and you are telling someone to use it like a drum — play it like a drum using its wooden base.
Kaliyuga is a period of ignorance — when ignorance would spread. But no one would have imagined this much ignorance — that you would want SMP and standardisation for Ayurvedic medicines.
