When the Pandavas lost in the dice game, Bhagavan Krishna was in Dwaraka. Upon hearing the news, he immediately went to Hastinapura and then to the forest where the Pandavas were staying.
Draupadi spoke to Krishna, 'Madhusudana, I have heard from sages that you are the creator. Parashurama told me that you are the invincible Vishnu. I know that you are the essence of yajnas, gods, and the panchabhutas. Bhagavan, you are the very foundation of the universe.'
As she said this, tears began to flow from Draupadi’s eyes. Crying deeply, she continued, 'I am the wife of the Pandavas, the sister of Dhrishtadyumna, and your relative. In a full assembly, the Kauravas dragged me by my hair. It was during my periods. They tried to disrobe me. My husbands could not protect me.’
'That vile Duryodhana had earlier tried to kill Bhima by drowning him in water. He also plotted to burn the Pandavas alive in the lac house. Dushasana grabbed me by my hair and dragged me.'
'I am a noble woman born from fire. I have pure love and devotion towards you. You have the power to protect me. It is well known that you are under the control of your devotees. Yet, you did not listen to my plea.'
Bhagavan replied, 'Draupadi, understand this clearly - when you are angry with someone, they are as good as dead. Just as you cry today, their wives will also cry. Their tears will not stop. Very soon, they will all become food for jackals and foxes. You will become an empress. Even if the sky splits, the seas dry up, or the Himalayas crumble, my promise will not fail.'
