According to this,  Sati's father, Daksha Prajapati, organized a grand yajna (sacrifice) but excluded Shiva. Upset by the omission and her father’s disrespect, Sati still attended the yajna. When Daksha insulted her and Shiva, Sati could not endure the humiliation and self-immolated in the yajna fire.

Shiva, overwhelmed by grief, carried Sati's corpse across the universe. To prevent cosmic disruption due to Shiva's immense grief, Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember Sati’s body and scattered the pieces across the world. The places where her body parts fell became sacred sites known as Shakti Peethas.
