You must have heard about or experienced mind reading. Someone can tell what is there in your mind. You go to them, and they can read your mind. Is this some kind of magic? In magic, there is a method behind everything that you see. A magician’s job is to make something appear before you or give you an experience without you noticing the actual cause of it. The instruments, gadgets, or movements behind the magic are hidden from you. So, you see only the effect and wonder how this is possible.
This is different from mind reading. Magicians also perform mind reading, but that is different. We will not discuss con men who commit fraud by making it look like they have these skills. We are talking about real mind reading. Is it possible to read someone else’s mind? Why not? It should be absolutely possible.
Twenty-five years back, did we think that a mobile phone was possible? Without a wire, you can talk to people at a distance. You can walk around with these instruments wherever you go. Twenty years back, did we think about Bluetooth? Two devices can communicate with each other without the need for wire or even an internet connection. All these kinds of communication are possible. Wi-Fi – internet without a wire.
Twenty-five years ago, scientists and engineers thought out of the box, and we have all these technologies now. If they had thought, 'How can you send signals without wires, without physical connections?' we would not have had all these technologies today. So, the first thing is acceptance of possibility. An ordinary man would write it off, saying, 'How is that possible?' But an intelligent mind wouldn’t do that. For an intelligent mind, it is about how to get it done, how to achieve it.
Spiritual sciences establish that the origin of everything is common. You, me, birds, plants – we all have a common origin and are connected to each other. Just as every branch of a tree is connected to every other branch, we are all connected to each other. Vertically, laterally – we are all connected.
Physical communication through speech, writing, or emails is not the only form of communication. People communicate through gestures and body language. Do you need to learn body language or the meaning of gestures to understand them? No, not necessary. The moment we see a smile, we know what it means. The moment we see a raised eyebrow or a wrinkled forehead, we know what it means. Nobody needs to teach us this.
The mind, the universal mind, is common to all beings. Each one of us has a fragment of that universal mind. It is like land: the land is common, but if I purchase 1,000 sq ft, I call it mine. That 1,000 sq ft of land is in continuation with all the land around it. Even though I put up a wall to demarcate my 1,000 sq ft, underneath, my land is not an independent entity. It is connected to all the land around it. Water comes into my piece of land from around. Rats make burrows from my property into adjacent properties. Resources are common. The same rain nourishes my piece of land and those around it. Only, we don’t realize this.
The mind is also like that. There is a connection between minds. Just as air in your lungs can come out and later enter my lungs if we are sitting close to each other, thoughts can also come out of your mind and get into mine.
Emotions transfer this way. When you visit a friend who has lost a close one, you feel sad and down. Why should this happen? It is not your loss, yet you feel sad. Emotions transfer between minds. In the same way, thoughts and ideas can also travel between minds.
Then, why doesn’t it happen with everyone? Because we have built walls around us. This wall is called ego: 'I am this,' 'This is how I am,' 'This is my name,' 'These are my likes,' and 'These are my dislikes.' When these are strong and prominent, they act like walls that block these communications.
This mind-to-mind communication was very common in the past. Saints could do this. They could see what is going on in your mind, and they could also transform you by putting ideas in your mind. They didn’t have to tell you anything. Their mere presence would change you because, through this medium, they put ideas in your mind.
How could the saints do it? Because their egos were very light. They didn’t think much about themselves as individuals. So, mind-to-mind communication, both one-way and two-way, used to be easier and common. Today, we are all in our own individual worlds, with high walls all around us. Because of that, this kind of communication has become less common.
If you see those who still do mind reading, the genuine ones, they will have this quality – a light ego. Then, thoughts of others will flow into them, and their thoughts will flow into others. This is because the distinction between themselves and others is very weak. When you develop this quality, the thoughts of others will naturally flow into you, and you can make your thoughts flow into others.
Both Lord Rama and Kulasekara Alwar were Kshatriyas. They were both born in Punarvasu Nakshatra and abandoned the throne.
Mairavana, also known as Ahiravana, is a demon king and sorcerer in some Ramayana versions, particularly prominent in later adaptations. As an ally of Ravana, he kidnaps Rama and Lakshmana to offer them as sacrifices in his netherworld realm. Hanuman undertakes a daring mission to rescue them, ultimately defeating Mairavana by extinguishing his five life lamps simultaneously. This episode highlights the themes of devotion and good triumphing over evil.
