A child's body originates from the bodies of the parents. Just as the type of metal used determines the quality of the vessel, and the materials used in construction dictate the strength of a house, the health of parents - whether gross or subtle - affects their offspring. Medical science clearly recognizes that many diseases pass down through generations. If parents carry pathogens of diseases like epilepsy, insanity, tuberculosis, etc., their children often inherit their effects. Similarly, a child's physical appearance is influenced by the parents: like complexion, hair, or body mass.
Not just physical traits, but language, cultural expressions, tastes, dietary habits, behaviors, and thoughts of children also mirror their parents. A child absorbs many of these impressions while still in the mother's womb and naturally adopts them after birth. This is why, both physically and socially, a child is nearly seventy percent a replica of their parents. This principle forms the basis of distinctions between families, castes, races, and ethnic groups. If parental influence did not shape offspring, we wouldn't see distinct features in different communities like Chinese, Punjabis, Bengalis, South Indians, or Europeans.
The inheritance of traits, nature, and tendencies happens not just among humans but in other living beings as well. Along with physical inheritance, children also receive the mental and spiritual wealth of their parents. Just as wealth and reputation are passed down, so are inner virtues and spiritual attainments. Children of noble Brahmin families often inherit their forefathers' righteous qualities, whereas those born in families of criminals and anti-socials tend to reflect the environment they are raised in. Of course, every being carries their individual karma and past-life impressions, which is why we sometimes see children with traits different from their parents. However, such cases are exceptions rather than the norm.
The Indian caste system was structured around this concept, giving primary importance to birth and lineage. When a soul leaves one body and enters another, it seeks a womb suitable to its accumulated karma and tendencies, just as travelers choose accommodations matching their travel class - first-class passengers use luxury lounges, while third-class passengers settle in simpler waiting areas. Similarly, souls gravitate toward families that match their past impressions.
Birds and insects seek their preferred food sources - vultures are drawn to carcasses, crows to filth, bees to flowers, and hawks to smaller birds. In the same way, souls are guided by their past tendencies when choosing a birth. However, destiny determines the experiences a being must go through, and divine will ensures they are born into an environment best suited for their karmic journey. The spiritual state of parents influences the kind of soul that takes birth in their family. Therefore, to have noble offspring, parents must strive for self-purification and refinement.
If parents are morally and spiritually degraded, their children will likely suffer the same fate. Procreation is a great responsibility requiring careful preparation. Just as a farmer ensures good soil, proper plowing, and fertilization before planting seeds, parents must cultivate the right conditions - both physical and moral - before conceiving a child. Without such preparation, efforts to nurture and educate children later may not yield desired results.
It is said that unworthy children lead their ancestors to downfall. The reason is clear - bringing children into the world without adequate preparation is a serious mistake that brings suffering both in this life and beyond. When children become a source of disgrace, parents are also blamed for failing in their duty to raise worthy progeny. Engaging in procreation merely out of lust, without consideration for the responsibility it entails, is an animalistic tendency. Such reckless reproduction results in individuals who cause harm to society, spreading disorder and immorality. The blame for such societal degradation ultimately falls on irresponsible parents.
Today, many families are troubled by discord, and one of the main reasons is the rise of undisciplined, unrefined children. Parents, teachers, and society at large struggle with the arrogance, unruliness, and lack of values among the younger generation. From childhood, they exhibit stubbornness, and as they grow, they fall into indulgence and selfishness. When they become adults, their actions often bring harm rather than good to their families, communities, and even humanity. Such children, lacking virtues like discipline, kindness, service, sacrifice, and integrity, are becoming increasingly common.
The root cause of this decline is parental negligence. Many embark on the journey of parenthood without understanding its responsibilities, leading to a toxic social and familial environment. Ideally, parents should observe celibacy until full physical maturity and engage in procreation with the sole purpose of raising virtuous children. Even in married life, maintaining self-restraint results in healthy, intelligent, and long-lived offspring. However, most people are unaware of the impact of their actions on their children.
Children are not just biological extensions of their parents; they also inherit mental and spiritual tendencies. If parents harbor impure thoughts, selfishness, lack of self-control, and narrow-mindedness, these qualities will manifest in their children. Just as children born to physically diseased parents inherit weak constitutions, those born to morally and intellectually corrupt parents tend to be mentally and ethically weak.
Illegitimate or impure unions often result in offspring inclined toward wrongdoing. Parents who harbor enmity, hatred, or mental unrest often produce children with unattractive appearances and poor intellect. Research by scientists like Bastard Fowler and Dr. John Kanan confirms that a child's characteristics are deeply influenced by the mental and emotional states of the parents at conception. Even physically healthy couples can give birth to weak and unintelligent children if their minds are filled with negativity.
Thus, it is crucial to lead a righteous, virtuous life because it is the best way to ensure happiness and success. Our duty is to elevate our thoughts, character, and actions to the highest ideals. This not only benefits our worldly and spiritual well-being but also ensures the birth of noble offspring. The crisis of immoral and unworthy children can only be resolved if society re-establishes principles of morality, self-discipline, truth, and righteousness. Only by becoming virtuous ourselves can we hope to bring virtuous children into the world.
