Shiva purana talks about two combinations with which you should perform abhisheka of Shiva Linga.
Panchagavya and panchamrita.
Out of these, abhisheka with panchagavya is very important on Sundays.
Panchagavya means a mix of cow dung, gomutra, milk, curd, and ghee.
There is also a sixth component, water poured through kusha grass, darbha.
There is a proportion in which these six should be mixed.
Gomutra - 60 ml
Milk - 420 ml
Curd - 180 ml
Ghee - 60 ml
Kushodaka - 60 ml
Cow dung - the size of the top segment of the thumb.
There are mantras chanted while each of these six is added.
Gomutra - Gayatri
Cow dung - Gandhadvaram ..
Milk - Apyaayasva ..
Curd - Dadhikravna ..
Ghee - Tejosi shukrosi ..
Kushodaka - Devasya tva ..
In panchamrita we have milk curd, ghee, honey and sugar.
Abhisheka can be performed with these five separately and mixed together also.
The best naivedyam for Shiva Linga is ksheerannam what we call payasam or kheer in Hindi.
Rice cooked in milk and sugar added to it.
There are six types of Lingas.
Dhwani linga, Nada linga, Bindu linga, Makara linga, Ukara linga and Akara linga.
Pranava or Omkara is called Dhwani Linga.
In a swayambhu Shiva Linga , the linga part is called Nada linga.
The peetha part is called Bindu linga.
We know that Omkara has three parts.
Akara, ukara and makara.
If the Linga is fixed then it is called Makara Linga.
If the Linga is movable, then it is called Ukara Linga.
The Guru who has given you the upadesha of Panchakshara mantra is called Akara linga.
You should worship all these six every day.
Meaning -
Chant pranava or omkara.
Worship swayambhu Linga, which has come up naturally.
Worship Linga at temples consecrated by humans, which are generally fixed.
Worship Linga at home, which is of the small movable type.
In all these, the peetha should also be worshiped thinking that it is Shakti.
And worship your guru.
This is called Shadlingapuja.
This will give you relief from all worldly troubles.
If you are targeting moksha, mukti - complete freedom, then if you wear rudraksha, a quarter of the job is done.
If you wear bhasma, half the job is done.
If you chant Panchakshara and Omkara along with these, then three fourth of your job is done.
If you do puja of Shiva Linga and also pay respects to Bhagavan's devotees then your target is achieved.
