Every Newborn Deserves the Protection of the Mighty Jatakama Mantras
Now the newborn child is bathed with five mantras.
With the meanings of the mantras, you will understand its significance.
क्षत्रियै त्वा निरृत्यै त्वा द्रुहो मुञ्चामि वरुणस्य पाशात्
अनागसं ब्रह्मणे त्वा करोमि शिवे ते द्यावापृथिवी उभे इमे
अनागसं ब्रह्मणे त्वा करोमि – अपापं ब्रह्मणे त्वा करोमि
All hindrances, all troubles, all grief, all miseries – there will be papa behind all of them. These are all results of wrongdoings done by oneself.
There are two ways to get rid of them — one, by undergoing the suffering and exhausting them; two, through prayaschittas.
Here the father is saying, I am making you sinless for the sake of Brahma, for the sake of Veda, for the sake of attaining knowledge.
क्षत्रियै means diseases that cannot be treated or are very difficult to cure. I am releasing you from such diseases, protecting you from such diseases. Incidentally, this set of mantras is also very useful in the case of cancer.
They are incurable because of heavy papa associated with them.
Nirruti is the chief of the raksho varga – the demons.
There is a category of diseases in Ayurveda called agantuka – diseases of mysterious nature, there is no physiological reason. All tests normal, but diseases and symptoms are still there. They are considered to be the influence of these negative forces. Most mental diseases belong to this category.
From them I am releasing you, protecting.
Varunasya pasha – Varuna ties his rope around liars and punishes them with diseases such as jalodara. Varuna doesn’t like people lying.
I am releasing you from that, protecting you from that.
May earth and heaven, life here and hereafter be auspicious for you.
May men and gods both be favourable towards you.
शं ते अग्निस्सहाद्भिरस्तु शं द्यावापृथिवी सहौषधीभिः
शमन्तरिक्षं सह वातेन ते शं ते चतस्रः प्रदिशो भवन्तु
Agni and water, may they together be auspicious for you.
In yajnas, Agni and water are considered to be a dampati, a couple.
This also means — may yajnas be auspicious for you.
Dyavaprithivi – heaven and earth – they are father and mother. May they be auspicious for you.
भूमिर्माता भ्रातान्तरिक्षं द्यौर्नः पिता – Atharva Veda
सहौषधीभिः – along with plants and herbs.
Atmosphere along with wind, along with air and the four primary directions, may they all be auspicious for you, towards you.
या दैवीश्चतस्रः प्रदिशो वातपत्नीरभि सूर्यो विचष्टे
तासां त्वाऽऽजरस आ दधामि प्र यक्ष्म एतु निरृतिं पराचैः
The four directions are protected by Vayu because he keeps on visiting them.
I am leaving you in their protection till old age — a jarasah.
May all diseases go back to the direction Nirruti — southwest — where they belong.
May they retract without being able to harm you.
अमोचि यक्ष्मात् दुरितात् अवर्त्यै द्रुहः पाशात् निरृत्यै चोदमोचि
अहा अवर्तिम् अविदत् स्योनं अप्यभूद्भद्रे सुकृतस्य लोके
Releasing you from all diseases, all troubles, from sins, from attacks from cruel people, from attacks from evil forces, from poverty — by my doing so, you are going to live comfortably and will attain punya loka, the world occupied by people doing noble deeds.
Meaning — I am setting you in the path of righteousness by removing all those influences, protecting you from all those influences which can make you go astray and suffer.
सूर्यं ऋतं तमसो ग्राह्याः यद्देवा अमुञ्चन्नसृजन्व्येनसः
एवमहमिमं क्षेत्रियात् जामिशंसात् द्रुहः मुञ्चामि वरुणस्य पाशात्
Once Surya came under the attack of asuras and was masked by darkness.
Then Devas released him from this darkness.
In the same way, I am releasing this boy from incurable diseases, from curses, from attacks by cruel people, and also the pasha of Varuna.
Don’t you think every newborn needs the mighty protection of these mantras in that tender state?
