The Fifth Mantra of the First Mandala of Rigveda
अग्निर्होता कविक्रतुः सत्यश्चित्रश्रवस्तमः ।
देवो देवेभिरा गमत् ।
Agni is Hota. He is the one who makes this Homa happen. Without Agni, there is no Homa.
Kavi Kratu – for any process, two things are involved: knowledge and action.
Take Amazon for example. There are people who envisage the entire business process — how to buy, how to stock, how to sell. They create the workflows, they create systems — this is knowledge. Then there are the people who actually do the physical process: getting stuff into the godown, stacking them, delivering them to the buyers. This is action.
In the case of Agni, about Yajna — he has complete knowledge and he also executes the Yajna, being the most important active participant in it.
Kratu here has two meanings — knowledge and action. He spans across both from end to end.
He is called Satya — because he never fails — never fails in providing results.
Shrava means fame — he is the most famous, not for one reason, for various reasons.
May he come to this Yajna of ours with the other Devas who are going to be offered Ahutis.
The Sixth Mantra
यदङ्ग दाशुषे त्वमग्ने भद्रं करिष्यसि
तवेत्तत् सत्यमङ्गिरः
Anga — this is a Sambodhana used, like 'Sir'.
Dashushe bhadram karishyasi — to the Yajamana, someone who gives, who is performing Yajna — you always do Bhadram to them.
What is Bhadram? — वित्तगृहप्रजापशुरूपम् कल्याणम् — you always bless them with wealth, house, progeny, and animals such as cows and horses.
Yad vai purushasya vittam tad bhadram griha bhadram praja bhadram pashavo bhadram
says Shatyayaniyopanishad.
Agni is addressed as Angira — अङ्गिरा अङ्गाराः — the fact that he does Bhadram to the worshiper is also Satyam — indisputable.
The Seventh Mantra
उप त्वाग्ने दिवेदिवे दोषावस्तर्धिया वयम्
नमो भरन्त एमसि
Oh Agni Deva, we come to you every day — dive dive — during day and night — doshavastaha — to offer Namaskaras to you. We come near you for this.
The Eighth Mantra
राजन्तमध्वराणां गोपामृतस्य दीदिविम्
वर्धमानं स्वे दमे
He is at his home — the Yagashala. That is where we, his worshipers, go every day, day and night, and pay respects to him.
He is brilliant. He is the protector of Adhwaras — because he is there to protect, only because he is there to protect, the Yajna is Adhwara, without violence. Otherwise, the Rakshasas would come and destroy the Yajna.
Agni Deva keeps the Yajna non-violent.
We do Yajnas, any kind of worship, for welfare. But then Rakshasas, negative forces trying to disrupt, causing obstacles, is also a Veda-recognized fact.
Many people say — I sit for prayers, but something comes in between. I am not able to focus. I am not able to sit and do Puja. My mind becomes restless. What to do? I don’t feel like doing Puja only.
Veda says — these are Asuri Shaktis and Rakshasi Shaktis trying to obstruct.
What to do then? Can any technique help?
You are doing Puja to come out of negativity. But the Puja itself is obstructed because of negativity.
What is the solution?
The solution is there in the mantra itself.
Go under the protection of divinity. Agni is addressed here as the protector of Yajna. Yajna is his own worship. But even for doing that, we need his protection.
This is why we keep a lamp lighted whenever we do something good — because we need his protection.
