The Result of Religious Acts Performed Without Faith

Nathva Ganesham Gajavaktra Yuktam Gurum Smaran Veda Vidam Varenyam Vishnum Vibhum Vaidika Tattva Roopam Vaikuntha Samstham Satatam Namami. Ashraddhaya Hutham Dattam Tapas Taptam Krutantu Yat. Asadityuchchade Partha, Nachatat Pretya Nehasa. Whatever is offered in Agni as Daanam, Tapas observed, fasting, abstinence. They are considered to be asat if not done with faith.

None of these will yield result neither here or hereafter if not done with faith.

After Vamana ordered the demon king Bali to go to Patala and live there, Bali asked him, how will I survive? What will I eat? What will I drink? Where are my facilities? Ashrottriyam, shraddhamadheetamavratam, tvadakshinam yajnamanurtvijahutam, ashraddhaya dattamasamskritam havirbhagaha, shadedetava daityapungava.

Food offered in Shraddha where the Brahmins partaking the food are not learned in the Vedas. One. Two. Whatever is learned without observing Vrata discipline required to be observed by the student. Three. Yagnya performed without giving proper Dakshina.
Four. Yagnya performed by people who are not eligible to perform it.
Five. Offerings made to gods without proper purificatory rights.
Six. Whatever is given in Dana without faith, these six will go to you, says Vamana to Bali.

The beneficiary of all these six will be only Bali. Veda says, Shraddhaya deyam, Ashraddhaya adeyam. Offer with faith. Do not offer when there is no faith. Shraddha yagnis samidhyate. What enkindles Agni is faith. Shraddha, inkindling of Agni is the first step in performing Yagya. That is done when you have faith. Faith prompts you to inkindle Agni. Don't do something because an astrologer has told you or someone else has told you. Unless you have faith, don't do it. This is what the scriptures say. Then don't blame that the result did not come. Don't blame the capability of the person who suggested. For anything to work, faith is absolutely necessary.

Another important aspect of worship is Atmanam Vishnum Dhyatva Archana Stuti Namaskaradi Kartavyam. When you are worshipping Shri Hari, praising Shri Hari or doing Namaskara to him, you have to think that you are Shri Hari himself. Then as I explained earlier, the divinity slowly assimilates into you. This is a technique.
Hari Om.

  • Why does the Gita classify rituals performed without faith as Asat?
The term Asat means non-existent or untruth. Even if a ritual is physically performed with great expense, if the heart lacks conviction, the spiritual vibration remains dormant. Such an act does not connect the finite soul with the infinite Divine, making it fruitless in both the material and spiritual realms.
  • What is the hidden significance of Vamana giving the six defective offerings to Bali?
This reveals a cosmic law of energy distribution. Spiritual energy generated through flawed means or lack of integrity cannot ascend to the higher deities. Instead, it remains in the lower realms (Patala). It serves as a warning that improper spiritual practice feeds one's lower or egoic nature rather than elevating the consciousness.
  • How does the lack of Vedic learning in a participant affect the outcome of a Shraddha ceremony?
A Shraddha is not merely a social meal but a high-frequency invocation. When the participants lack Veda-Vidya (sacred knowledge), they cannot act as pure conductors for the mantras. The subtle essence of the food is then lost to the higher ancestors and is instead diverted as base sustenance for the lower planes.
  • Why is Vrata or discipline considered mandatory for a student of sacred knowledge?
Knowledge without Vrata is like pouring milk into a cracked pot. Discipline creates the internal vessel (Adhikara) necessary to hold the power of the teachings. Without the purification gained through vows, the knowledge remains superficial and fails to transform the student's character.
  • What is the mystical role of Dakshina in a Yagya?
Dakshina is not a fee for service but a symbol of Tyaga (sacrifice) and gratitude. It completes the circle of energy. A ritual without Dakshina indicates a lingering greed or lack of surrender in the performer, which prevents the spiritual merits from manifesting.
  • What does the phrase Shraddha yagnis samidhyate imply about the nature of the sacred fire?
It implies that the physical fire in the altar is only a reflection of the fire of faith in the heart. Faith is the true fuel. Without it, the external fire is merely a chemical reaction. It is the heat of one's inner conviction that carries the offerings to the Divine.
  • Why should one avoid performing spiritual remedies solely based on external advice like astrology?
Spiritual practices are not mechanical fixes. If one performs a remedy out of fear or mere social pressure without internalizing the belief, the mind remains disconnected. The scriptures emphasize that internal resonance is the bridge between the seeker and the result.
  • What is the esoteric technique of Atmanam Vishnum Dhyatva?
It is the practice of Sohampujanam, or worshipping the Lord while meditating on the identity of the self with the Divine. By visualizing yourself as Shri Hari, you drop the limited ego-identity. This allows the attributes of the Divine—purity, strength, and peace—to flow into your own consciousness.
  • How does the divinity slowly assimilate into the seeker through this technique?
Just as a piece of iron takes on the properties of a magnet by constant proximity, the human mind takes on the qualities of the object it dwells upon. By identifying with Shri Hari during worship, the seeker’s vibrations are raised to match the Divine frequency, leading to gradual transformation.
  • What is the ultimate lesson regarding the relationship between faith and spiritual success?
The core lesson is that the quality of one's internal state determines the validity of the external act. Faith is the fundamental requirement that turns a mundane action into a transcendental one. Success in the spiritual path is not a matter of ritualistic quantity but of the depth of one's inner alignment with the Truth.
