The Recommended Height of Shiva Linga

We are seeing about the worship of Shiva Linga.
If you start Shiva Linga puja, it has to be every day.
A good muhurta should be chosen to begin the puja.
Linga should always have a peetha.
You should start Shiva Linga puja on an auspicious day.
Never worship a Linga without peetha.

In the case of sthavara linga of temple, they are made separately and joined together.
In the case of smaller Linga worshiped at home, they are carved from the same stone together or cast together in case it is metal — not to be made separately and joined later in this case.

The only exception is bana linga, where you can add a peetha later also.

Chala linga worshiped at home should be small.
Sthavara linga installed at temples should be bigger.

Shiva Purana talks about how much should be the height of the Shiva Linga.
All ancient measures are based on the person.

For example, if someone is building a house, all its measurements are based on the length of the arm of that particular person.
It is called hasta, meaning the length of the arm of that particular person.

They are not standard measures like metre or foot as we have it now.
Our acharyas consider the house as an extension of the person who is the head of the house, and all measurements of the house like length, breadth, height are in proportion with the body of that person.

That means the measurement of each house will be in proportion with the occupant of that house.
Measures are not standardized.

That also means that the house built for one person may not be suitable for another person.
This is the real Vastu Shastra — not the one that we often get to see today.

In the same way for Shiva Linga also.
If you are going to install a sthavara linga, build a temple and install a Linga, then it is based on the measure called angula.

It is the breadth of your one finger — on an average you can say about 1.75 cm.
That is one angula.
It will vary from person to person.

For achala linga, sthavara linga — the minimum height should be 12 angulas. That means if you are building the temple — not the mason — the person who is spending and building the temple, then it should be 12 times the breadth of your finger.

Roughly you can say 21 cm.
If it is less, then the power is also less.
If it is more, then there is no problem.

In the same way, if you are getting a Shiva Linga for worship at home, then the minimum height should be one angula, the breadth of your finger.
It shouldn’t be less. It can be more.
