Brahma wanted to still expand his creation. He wanted to create beings so that they can procreate and multiply.
He created the four Kumaras — Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana, and Sanatkumara. They are collectively called the Sanakadi Kumaras. Brahma asked them to undertake the task of creation. They said no — they wanted to remain brahmacharis. Brahma tried to convince them. They did not budge.
Brahma became very angry. He tried to reason with himself and control his anger. However, his anger came out from between his eyebrows in the form of a young boy of bluish-red color. As soon as he was born, he started screaming loudly.
Brahma said — since you started screaming as soon as you were born, you will be known as Rudra.
Rudra asked Brahma — what are my names, where should I live, what should I do?
Brahma said —
हृदिन्द्रियाण्यसुर्व्योम वायुरग्निर्जलं मही
सूर्यश्चन्द्रस्तपश्चैव स्थानान्यग्रे कृतानि मे
You will live in the hearts of people, you will live in the indriyas, in the pranas, in the pancha bhutas, and also Surya, Chandra, and Tapas. You will be known by the names — Manyu, Manu, Mahinasa, Mahan, Shiva, ऋतध्वज, Ugrareta, Bhava, Kala, Vamadeva, धृतव्रत.
And I am giving you eleven Rudranis as your wives. They are — धी, वृत्ति, उशना, उमा, नियुत्, सर्पि, इला, अम्बिका, इरावती, सुधा, दीक्षा.
Then with his eleven wives, Brahma asked Rudra to procreate. Rudra started creating, but whatever he created, they all looked like him. They were exact replicas of Rudra himself. The world started filling with Rudras. Brahma got worried. This was not what he wanted.
He told Rudra — you have to create variety, not the same kind of beings. Rudra said, I don’t do that, and then left to observe tapas.
Whatever Rudra had created by then are the crores and crores of Rudras that exist everywhere. This is detailed in Sri Rudram or Ashtadhyayi, which is part of the Vedas.
Brahma had to look for new options. He meditated and created ten sons. They are called Brahma’s Manasa Putras. This is the power of meditation — you can manifest when you meditate. You meditate intensely upon something you want, and it will manifest, it will come to you. You meditate upon Sri Hari’s lotus feet, and you will attain them. Even material objects — maybe not as much as Brahma could, but a little something compared to that.
This tapasya, meditation, is the process with which Brahma created. The Manasa Putras of Brahma were — Mareechi, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Bhrigu, Vasishta, Daksha, and Narada.
Narada was born out of Brahma’s lap.
Daksha from his thumb.
Vasishta from Brahma’s prana.
Bhrigu from skin.
Kratu from hand.
Pulaha from nabhi.
Pulastya from ears.
Angira from face.
Atri from eyes.
Mareechi from Brahma’s mind.
All were born from the various organs of Brahma as a result of meditation, without the need for a female partner.
Veda says, Brahma felt lonely, alone. He could not bear his loneliness. He wanted to multiply. So, he increased his body mass to twice its original size and split himself into two. One became male and one female — like the two halves of a bean.
Male and female are not entirely different, you see. They are 99% identical and only one percent different. They have both come out of the same Brahma, two halves of the same Brahma, separated at some point in time.
So, the longing to join together and become one is inherent in both male and female — because they were originally one. This longing to unite back became the primary tool of creation and procreation — desire to unite back with each other, desire to go back to the original state of being one.
