Sridhar Pandit was a staunch devotee of Vaishno Devi. Maa told him to organize a bhandara in his village. He did not have enough money. So Vaishno Devi appeared in the form of a girl and manifested sufficient food. In the meantime, Bhairavanath, who discovered Devi’s cave and saw her first, had become obsessed with her. He was chasing her with a request to marry him. He identified Devi at Sridhar’s place. When she went back to her cave, he also went behind her. She hid herself in a cave on the way for nine months to get away from Bhairavnath. When he finally located her, she broke open and escaped from the other end of the cave. This cave is called Ardhkuwari Gufa.
The term Ardhkuwari is derived from Adi Kuwari. Maa Vaishno Devi had taken a vow of celibacy. She is Adi Shakti. That is why she is called Adi Kuwari.
Ardhkuwari Gufa is between Katra and Vaishno Devi temple. It is at a distance of 7 km from Katra.
Maa Vaishno Devi hid from Bhairavnath in Ardhkuwari Gufa for nine months. He wanted to marry her. Since the cave protected her like a mother’s womb for nine months, it is called Garbhjoon. It is also shaped like a womb.
Ardhkuwari Gufa is 52 ft. long.
