अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुः शशबिंदुः सुरेश्वरः ।
औषधं जगतः सेतुः सत्य-धर्म-पराक्रमः ।।
This verse from the Vishnu Sahasranama presents a compact vision of how Bhagavan sustains the universe. Each name reveals a specific function — nourishment, illumination, calm authority, healing, guidance, and moral strength. Read together, they show not symbolism, but the inner mechanics through which order is preserved and life continues.
1. अमृतांशूद्भवः — The Source of the Moon
Amrutamshu means the Moon — the one whose rays nourish, cool, and sustain life.
By calling Bhagavan amrutamshudbhavah, the verse makes a precise statement: He is the source from which even the Moon arises.
The Moon governs rasa, ojas, growth, healing, and fertility. Yet this life-sustaining force itself does not stand independently. Bhagavan is the cause behind that cause. The nourishment that keeps the world alive ultimately traces back to Him.
2. भानुः — The Radiant Light
Then comes bhanu — the bright one, like the sun’s light that wakes up the world. But here, it isn’t just physical light. It is the inner effulgence that awakens every heart to truth and awareness. When the shastra says bhanu, it is talking about that pure, conscious glow that makes ignorance flee.
3. शशबिंदुः — The Mark upon the Moon
Shasha means a rabbit.
In classical Indian imagery, the Moon is said to bear a rabbit-like mark — shashanka.
Shashabindu refers to that distinct, visible mark upon the Moon’s surface.
Bhagavan is not always known through overwhelming display. He is recognized through a quiet, constant presence
4. सुरेश्वरः — The Lord of All Gods
The one who even the devas bow to. He is not some distant idea. He is the supreme controller, the one who carries all cosmic law and order on His shoulders. No confusion — He is the boss of everything that exists, the ruler of heaven itself.
5. औषधं जगतः — The Universal Medicine
The Lord is the medicine for the world. Not external herbs or rituals — He is the cure. When life hurts — and it does — when suffering knocks at the door, the presence of the Lord Himself is the healing balm. His name heals, His remembrance heals, His grace heals. That’s the power of this line.
6. सेतुः — The Bridge Across Sorrow
A bridge. Not a wall, not a fortress — a bridge. He is the one who lets us cross over from the shore of fear, pain, ignorance and doubt to the shore of courage, truth and wisdom. He doesn’t just pick you up — He takes you across.
7. सत्य-धर्म-पराक्रमः — The True Hero of Righteousness
Lastly, this is the kicker. The Lord is not passive. He does righteousness. He is the one who stands for what is right, noble and just in every age. He is the courage that upholds truth even when the world collapses around it. When righteousness falters, He is the one who restores it. This is why tradition calls Him the fearless upholder of Dharma.
What this verse establishes?
The world does not survive on laws alone. It survives because nourishment, clarity, calm, authority, healing, guidance, and moral strength all arise from a single sustaining intelligence.
'That intelligence is Bhagavan.'
