अगजाननपद्मार्कं गजाननमहर्निशं
अनेकदं तं भक्तानां एकदन्तमुपास्महे
The famous Ganesha shloka.
उपास्महे – How do we worship him?
अहर्निशम् – Day and night.
Whom do we worship?
अगजाननपद्मार्कः
गजाननः
भक्तानां अनेकदः
एकदन्तः
Beautiful shloka.
Aga means mountain.
Agaja means daughter of the mountain — daughter of Himavan — Parvati Devi.
Just like how a lotus would blossom upon seeing the sun — padma (lotus), arka (sun),
In the same way, him upon seeing whom the face (anana) of Parvati Devi blossoms like a lotus —
Him we worship.
Gajanana – That you know, he has got the face of an elephant. Him we worship.
Ekadanta – That also you know – Lord with a single tusk. Him we worship.
Bhaktanam anekadaha – Eka means one, aneka means many.
When his devotees ask him for one thing, he gives many, so many.
That is his magnanimity, that is his kindness – bhaktanam anekadaha.
He doesn’t just give one thing — he gives health, wealth, success, everything.
That is why he is anekadaha. Him we worship.
The beauty is how the words have been played around with:
Agajanana – Gajanana
Anekadanta – Here it is anekadam tam – you have to split like that.
Anekadantam – Ekadantam.
