Where did Hare Rama Hare Rama........ Hare Krishna Hare Krishna...... come from ?

The famous and revered Hari Nama Smaranam is from Kali Santaranopanishad.

This is a Shanti patha chanted at the beginning of the Upanishad. The acharya and shishya are saying this together – Protect us together, nourish us together, give us the strength and enthusiasm to put to practice whatever we have learned, may what we have learned be brilliant, may there never be hatred between us.

At the end of Dwapara Yuga Narada went and asked Brahma, while roaming around the Bhuloka how to get across Kali.

Kali is the presiding deity of Kaliyuga and an avatara of Sin. Rishi Markandeya narrates the following as the characteristics of Kali Yuga happening under the influence of Kali.

1. All will be dishonest.

2. Charity and yajna will be there only for name sake.

3. The Brahmins will take to servitude.

4. The lowly ones will become prosperous.

5. Sinners will become rulers.

6. Longevity of men will reduce.

7. Women will be less concerned about their chastity.

8. People will sell food.

9. Brahmins will sell Vedas.

10. Cows will yield less milk.

11. Prostitution will flourish.

12. Flowers and fruits will be less.

13. Brahmins will become beggars and become fashionable.

13. Sages will becomes sellers.

14. The ashrama dharma will not be observed.

15. Students will have illicit relationship with their teachers’ wives.

16. Rains will happen out of season.

17. Many lands will become barren.

18. There will be murder and violence everywhere.

19. Merchants will use false measures and cheat people.

20. Good people will decrease in number and evil increase.

21. Girls will become pregnant at the age of eight or nine. Young boys will become fathers.

22. Men will have grey hair at the age of sixteen.

23. Elderly men will behave like adolescents.

24. People will die in hunger.

As the yuga progresses, these will go on increasing.

Narada asked Brahma how to protect himself from all these while roaming around bhuloka.

You have asked a good question. I shall tell you a secret contained in the Vedas to get across Kali.

Merely by taking the name of Adipurusha Narayana one is absolved of Kali.

Narada then asked what that name is.

Brahma said – The sixteen names – Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare – shall remove all the sins of Kali.

No better remedy is seen in the Vedas than this.

With these sixteen names, the sixteen layers of man’s ignorance are torn down and the ultimate truth illuminates before him as the Sun coming from behind clouds.

Then Narada asked what is the vidhi for chanting Sri Hari’s names.

Brahma said there is no special vidhi for this.

It can be chanted always whether you are clean or unclean.

Through chanting Hare Rama ……  the bhakta achieves

Salokata – to live in the same world as Sri Hari, Vaikuntha

Sameepata – closeness of Sri Hari

Saroopata – he will become like Sri Hari in form

Sayujyata – he will become one with Sri Hari

After one completes chanting the Hari Nama Three and a half crore times he is relieved from grave sins such as brahmahatya, veerahatya, svarnasteya and all offences committed against Pitrus, Devas and fellow beings.
